Corruption became unbelievably common during the post civil war years due to the railroads, meddling with stock prices, and through corrupt judges. President Grant played a large role in the “Era of Good Stealings.” Both him and his people caused a lot of corruption.

This was when the company was constructing the Trans-Continental railroad and sub-hired itself in order to get paid double. The company gave stock to congressman in order to avoid getting them into trouble. A newspaper ended up exposing the scandal, two Congressmen went down, & the vice president was even involved, although grant wasn't involved,
