Some of the these gentlemen have been credited with changing the presidency and defining the age, while others have been credited with being helplessly defined by the events of the era in which they held the office. History gives reverence to all of the men who served in what is considered the most powerful position not only in the United States, but also in the world. On Saturday, December 9th, the US Supreme Court voted 5-4 to abandon the hand recounts in the counties and set a new hearing for December 11th. This hearing lasted for two solid days, and on December 12th, the US Supreme Court ruled 7-2 in Bush v Gore and reversed the verdict made by the Florida Supreme Court. The court ruled that: not all ballots were being treated equally and thus a violation of the Constitution 's 14th amendment equal protection clause, the Florida Supreme Court would be required to set up new voting practices and standards to follow in the recount. However, the justices were split 5-4 over how to solve the problem at hand. Five of the justices expressed that the initial date already set for the recounted votes should infact…

In “How a Democrat Killed Welfare” by Premilla Nadasen we read about Bill Clinton, former Democratic President of the U.S. and how while in office, he essentially destroyed welfare in the U.S. Firstly, I just wanted to say that I was very surprised that this article was in the course packet, considering that this is a sociology class; and I’d assume most if not all sociologists are Democrats. I found it surprising to see an article slamming Democrats. After Clinton was elected in 1992, many people breathed a sigh of relief as they thought the the horrors of the Reagen-Bush era were over.…

This outraged many conservatives and people who had voted for him in hopes of lower taxes. As a result of the soaring tax rates, the economy fell into a recession in 1981. Unemployment rates went up and many businesses went bankrupt. I don’t think Bush handled this well at all.…

Clinton was successful in eradicating the federal deficit for the first time in forty years with the prospect of a surplus. The American people enjoyed an era of prosperity. During his presidency, unemployment rates plummeted while inflation rates remained at historic lows; prosperity raised at all income levels (the incomes of households in the broad middle of the economic spectrum increased by a remarkable 35 percent during his eight years in office) (Klein, 2003). He constructed comprehensive reforms for the less fortunate even in 2016; his reforms are still helping the American people. Current Event 3 In the article “A Brief History of Juanita Broaddrick, The Woman Accusing Bill Clinton of Rape,” the author Eyder Peralta relates about the story of Juanita Broaddrick, who claims ex-president Bill Clinton raped her in a hotel room in 1978, when Mr Clinton was the Arkansas attorney general. Broaddrick’s rape allegations have surfaced twice, once when Bill Clinton was running for presidency in 1992, and another one during Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign in 2016. The fact that Juanita’s story has been given national importance during the Clintons presidential campaigns shows that women’s bodies are a tool of biopolitics, that their tragedies are secondary to the plans of certain people to win political positions, and that…

This contrasts to the end of the section where he tells the American people “to act wisely, to act vigorously, to act speedily. . .”…
