Health plays a vital role in human development and functionality. Throughout this century, doctors, scientists, and other professionals have heatedly debated and still do to this day, as to how much sleep is necessary for the human body to stay healthy. After an extensive research and from personal experience, one is forced to say that at least seven hours of nightly sleep is necessary in order for one to avoid sleep deprivation symptoms. Among scientific studies, there are ranges based on age as to how many hours one should sleep every night. The National Science Foundation (NSF), summarized the recommended amount of hours one should sleep, organized by age. Newborns (0-3 months) should get 14-17 hours each day. Infants (4-11 months) should have 12-15 hours, toddlers (1-2 years) should have 11-14 hours. Preschoolers (3-5) should have 10-13 hours, school age children (6-13) should have 9-11 hours. …show more content…
Though getting less than seven hours for one night will not have much of an effect on an individual, if the person chronically less than seven hours, then signs of symptoms will be seen and will likely diminish one's daily functionality, ones cognitive performance, as well as seeing signs of other sleep- deprivation symptoms.
Sleep deprivation is caused by an excessive lack of sleep. There are many symptoms that one might face when one is sleep deprived. According to a board-certified physician Brandon Peters, the most common symptoms are sleepiness throughout one's day, mood changes, difficulty concentrating and impaired performance, memory and thinking problems, disorientation, hallucinations and paranoia (a belief that you are being persecuted by some outside entity), pain complaints, and lastly, a disruption of ones normal sleep cycle.
