Ready For College Case Study

Meet Jozina Campbell. She’s a high achiever finishing her years in high school, and she joined the Gateway program for successful, college-bound African-American and Hispanic students. To Jozina, Gateway was an opportunity to seize—the first step onto the path that would take her to success. But it took up a lot of time from the things she enjoyed most, like her academics or her leadership roles in the community. The speakers at the program told Jozina everything she should do to get ready for college: develop a list of potential colleges and universities, take the SAT or ACT or both, apply to the colleges Early Action or Early Decision, and then make sure you take every scholarship opportunity you can. The list piled up, and Jozina felt buried in worry about everything she had to accomplish in a short amount of time, let alone make up for the time she was spending at Gateway in her academics! The problems that determine the future are the problems we need to fix now, and college worry is all about the future. Today, future is hitting seniors head-on. The search process is broad and unwieldy because of the Internet and endless mail. Standardized tests are the fastest of all the seasons, but the test or tests they choose to take will be the longest few hours of their lives. The application season is full of self-doubt, while students wonder whether they really want to go to a big metropolitan university or stay with a small college, or if they really want to start pre-med or go with a graphic design major. Then, the scholarship season reinforces the pressure on a student to figure out their major and career now so college is potentially less costly.
