1.1 Lubrication
Friction is caused during machining operation at tool and chip interface. This produces the heat which affects the machining performance in terms of surface finish, dimensional accuracy, tool life and machining cost. To reduce the heat different techniques have been utilized. Earlier, during industrial revolution water was utilized as a coolant but it caused corrosion [1]. With the development of technology different cooling and lubrication techniques have come into existence. The flood lubrication has been mostly used in industries for cooling and lubrication purpose. Different cutting fluid are available for flood lubrication. The lubricant used is about 3 to 10 liter per minute for flood lubrication. Cutting …show more content…
Now a days it is important for production work to be a cost effective as there are variety of product available for same function. Therefore, cost of the product becomes a criteria. Also synthetic oil is not environmental friendly which causes pollution [4].
Collectively all these issues prefers for new research in lubrication fluid which will give best result over the conventionally used fluids.
3. Report on the present investigation
3.1 Vegetable oil
Vegetable oils are already used as lubricant since long time. The selection of vegetable oil lubricant mainly depends upon the composition and stabilization towards oxidation. Therefore, the stability of the vegetable oil can be improved by the addition of anti-oxidant agents …show more content…
Glycerol consists of three alcohol groups. Fatty acids can be attached to these two groups to form mono glycerides (one fatty acid), di glycerides (two fatty acids) and tri glycerides (three fatty acids).
3.3 Why vegetable oil as a lubricant?
Vegetable oil is always being used as a lubricant in their natural forms. They have many advantages when considered for industrial and machinery and lubrication purpose. Vegetable oil can have excellent lubricity and lubrication properties over synthetic oil. In many applications like for tractor transmission, friction material need to be added to reduce clutch slippage [8].
Lubricants need to possess some lubrication properties which give good machining performance. Vegetable oil have very high viscosity index (VI). For example 223 for soya bean oil versus 90-100 for most petroleum oils. Restated, the viscosity of a high VI oil changes less than that of a low VI oil for a given temperature change. The oil’s viscosity does not reduce as much when exposed to high temperatures, and does not increase as much as petroleum oils when exposed to cool temperatures
