My favorite subjects are mathematics and English. Both of these subjects, I feel, give me a chance to explore. From English, I learn more about the human psyche and society at large. The world is so complicated that simply dwelling in it is not enough. Stepping away – and into a book– allows me to focus on a single aspect of the world. I think I do well in English because I ask many questions that push the boundaries of what people are willing to admit–especially questions that evaluate our society’s dynamic. My first genuine experience with this word has certainly altered my world in every possible aspect. No longer are my dreams a quiet desire that I could not ever imagine happening in the near future. Prep for Prep has motivated me to dream the unfathomable, ponder the unthinkable and even to do unbelievable. For this reason, the Prep for Prep program is perhaps the most important experience of my life to date. Prep for Prep is a highly selective program aimed at minority grade school and middle-school students who are nominated by teachers at some 500 public schools in New York City. Once chosen for the program — 3,500 students vie annually for the 200 slots — the youth undergo 14 months of academic preparation and then apply to private schools renowned for their high scholastic standards. For many self- proclaimed geniuses, Prep for Prep was something like a heaven, a place where one could finally shed the façade of being another public school student. What is brilliance, if not utilized for the benefit of everyone? It would have been quite difficult to commence, if I had no true goal. This opportunity of being accepted into Prep for Prep did not make me smarter than any other child in my public school–I was only lucky. I had to use this amazing opportunity to give future children, regardless of his or her socioeconomic standing, the same opportunities that I have been given as a result of Prep for Prep program. Prep was in many ways just the beginning of my interest in education and all that it has to offer. Knowing that I was able to successfully complete the Prep for Prep program has given me confidence to capitalize on tremendous academic opportunities. I am no longer apologetic for my interest in academics. I look forward to challenging myself and using these opportunities to provide for those without. Prep instilled a love of hope in me, an appreciation in the tales of the unfortunate. This is the sort of hope that I would like to provide to other
