Preoperative Skin Infection

Decent Essays
The study involves randomly assigning adults experiencing surgery in different hospitals to preoperative skin preparation with either CHA scrub or PI scrub and paint. The primary outcome is any sign of infection within 30 days after surgery. Secondary outcomes include the individual types of infection (superficial incisional infection, deep incisional infection, or organ-space infection). Quantitative research method will be used for this clinical topic and the measurement method will be collecting the secondary data such as literature research, patient medical records, patient satisfaction surveys, hospital reports or governmental database on SSIs. This data can reveal important relationships and offer a good way to retrieve data efficiently

On Thursday, August 24, 2017 I got the experience to follow Horizon Specialty Hospital of Henderson’s Wound Care Team. During this experience, I was able to witness the removal of a wound VAC (vacuum assisted closure) and surgical stitches, different methods of wound monitoring and discussed the healing process. For new admissions, the Wound Care Team does a physical examination of the body, looking for any wounds, bruises, scars, tubes and IV placements. They take pictures, measurements and note the location of the wound. Since the hospital still uses paper charting, they handwrite all of their notes and upload them to the patients' medical chart when done with their assessment.…

This exposure increases the risk of infection or even damage to the graft wound. Moreover, risk of exposure increased because when patients wait for too long for the doctor to arrive, they are bound to tamper with the temporary dressing, hence, contaminating the wound in the process. My other observation was that patients were not being sedated as frequently as it was necessary. This left the patients in discomfort and, sometimes, pain, hence tempting them to tamper with the wounds to try and ease the discomfort.…

Introduction Variation exists in every industry and there are different types of variation. Patients may use the data collected about variations to determine what physician to schedule an appointment with for a medical condition, what facility to have a procedure at based on outcomes, what percentage of patients have complications, or even look at what facilities are using more of evidence-based care approaches. The focus in healthcare is on three different types of variation that may influence the care of a patient, the operations of a healthcare facility, and influence healthcare providers on decisions that they may make with care for a patient. The concept of variation within the medical field has been in discussion since 1938 in England and Wales (Joshi, Ransom, Nash, & Ransom, 2014).…

We are simply trying to utilize the community resources to help administer a level of understanding to help eliminate the many possible reasons surgical site infection could occur. Communication is essential not only for liability, but to also give the patient any and all possible outcomes that may arise. The health care profession is one built on a system of checks and balances, and in the perfect world these conditions would not occur. The facility would have a hard time discussing just how the condition of the surgical site infection…

I feel that this is an experience that every student in healthcare should go through. One of the most important observations that I made concerns the various procedures of preventing infections in the operating room. The prevention majorly focuses on the patient, especially when considered the patient has open sounds during the operating process. At times, the practitioners tend to forget the importance of cleaning their hands with soap and water or with alcohol-based cleaners when interacting with the environment (Scott, Earl, Leaper, Massey, Mewburn, Williams, 1999). Notably, the assumption that the practitioner does not need to clean hands simply because they have gloves is misplaced, and it is often overlooked (Weber, Anderson, &Rutala, 2013; Karki& Cheng, 201)).…

1.1. Background information Postoperative surgical site infections (SSIs) are a major source of morbidity and mortality in the surgical patient. It is the 3rd commonly reported nosocomial infection accounting for 10 to 40% of all nosocomial infections[1, 2]. In 2010, an estimated 16 million operative procedures were performed in acute care hospitals in the United States.…

The sentence: "I was never told that I should not[...]" is a sentence bearing a lot of meaning. Miscomprehension, inadequate counselling, factors limiting comprehension and patient receptiveness should be assessed. No specific study addressed this issue, but Chan et al (4) showed that patient education aimed at patients providing their own wound care in a home setting after proper education showed similar results from patient-provided clean dressing changes compared to nurse-provided sterile technique dressing changes. I would tend to think that similar patient education provided in the pre-operative period followed by a post-operative education session would be an important factor promoting healing. Question: 10.2- Appraise this best practice approach to address surgical site infections.…

Surgical site infections were interesting to me due to the high incidences occurring. “Surgical site infections (SSIs) are the second most common health care-associated infection. In 2002, of the 290,485 SSIs reported in the United States, 8,025 of the affected patients died” (Chiang, Herwaldt, Blevins, Cho, & Schweizer, 2015). A surgical site infection is defined as an infection occurring within 30 days of surgery.…

This essay will focus on Surgical site infections (SSIs) which is defined as “an SSI is an infection related to an operative procedure that occurs at or near the surgical incision within 30 days of the procedure” (Diaz & Newman 2015, p. 63). The reason for selecting this topic is that despite making a great effort, SSIs are still a challenging problem for medical professionals, and patients’ own microbial flora are a main cause of SSIs (Srinivas et al. 1025, p. 1379). Therefore, disinfectants for preoperative skin preparation must be selected based on evidence. In order to articulate the selected topic, the PICO framework will be used which is composed of four elements: population, intervention, comparator, and outcome (Glasziou, Del Mar &…

Healthcare associated infections (HAIs) are infections that the patient acquire while staying in the hospital for receiving medical or surgical treatment. These infections can be caused by infectious agents such as virus, bacteria, fungi, and less common type of pathogen. The HAIs can occur anywhere the healthcare provided such as acute care hospitals, nonhospital sittings such as mobile surgical centers, hemodialysis centers, long-term facilities such as nursing homes and the providers’ offices (Curtis et al., 2013). There are many risk factors that are associated the HAIs which include indwelling medical devices usage (indwelling urinary catheters, central or peripheral intravenous lines, and endotracheal tubes), injections, surgical procedures,…

The introduction discussed the worldwide problem of surgical site infections (SSI) within acute care settings in European and American patients. The health care acquired infections (HAI) of interest focused on SSIs. Although all patients within the acute care settings were susceptible to HAI, the greatest risk was found with patients requiring intensive care stays. As a result of HAIs, patients had extended hospital stays and significantly added health care cost.…
