In this novel, we see our main character Todd living in a town named Prentisstown, and this town is all that exists to him, because that is what he’s been told. This place, “Prentisstown” is not what it seems, which the reader finds out very early in the novel. Mayor Prentiss is the manipulative leader of Prentisstown, and has been planning to take over New World, he has just been waiting on todd to become a man. All the lies Todd has been told become very apparent as we progress through the novel.

The nullification of a population's education is a huge part in a plot to manipulate them into thinking what you want to them to think, and believing what you want them to believe, because education is power, and Mayor Prentiss knows this. New World was on a steady downfall, with crops failing, and sickness all over. The blame for this was placed on a native alien species, in which a war soon ensued due to that blame. Soon after this war, Mayor Prentiss of Prentisstown began his plot to enslave all of new world, and it all started with his totalitarian reign over Prentisstown. Manipulating the men of the town to be in his army, Mayor Prentiss soon carved a path of chaos and war to Haven, the capital of New World, and captured it. The reigns are now in the hands of the murdering, manipulative man, Mayor
