Prenatal Environment Analysis

Throughout the first five weeks of this class, Developmental Psychology, we have covered many important topics both on blackboard and throughout the first eight chapters in our book. The topic I am going to discuss is on The Prenatal Environment: Threats to Development in Chapter 2. One article I found only focuses on one teratogen: an environmental agents such as a drugs, chemicals, virus, or other factor that produces birth defects. The article is called “Prenatal Methamphetamine Exposure and Childhood Behavior Problems at 3 and 5 years of Age.” I got this article from a pediatric journal, an official one of the American Academy of Pediatrics. There are many authors all with either a MD or PhD and first one on the list is Linda L. LaGasse …show more content…
On a personal level, if I am aware of the of all the prenatal environments that could impair my child 's development, I could save myself and my child many problems psychological and psychically. When it comes to the prenatal environment, I mainly focused on drug use, but there is more than just that. A mother’s diet, a mother’s age, a mother’s prenatal support, her health, drug use, and use of alcohol and tobacco, all have a possibility of disrupting the development of an unborn child. For example, when I plan to become a mother, I should be aware of my own health first, I should assure that when I am pregnant that I have a proper diet for supporting the developing child, I should assure my body is healthy enough to care for a child at my age, and be sure to stay away from chemicals, drugs, and alcohol. However, it 's not only the mother that could have affect on the prenatal environment but also the father. The father can influence prenatal environment of the fetus by, for example, smoking around the mother. This could lead to second hand smoke which could affect the mother’s health, which then could influence the unborn child’s development. In the book, it gives the example of the greater the second hand smoking level, the lower the birthweight which can be very critical. Also, if a father is physically and emotionally abusive to the mother, that can also impair the development of an unborn child. Overall, I will want to assure that when I am pregnant that I will do anything to make sure my child is in the best prenatal environment, so I can assure they will develop properly and enter the world healthy. I would also, use this knowledge to inform others, especially from having my own family experiences under some of these

When a baby is born prematurely, the baby is not finished developing, which result in complications when they are born. When infants are born prematurely, born three weeks or more before full term, or have a low birth rate, they have to reside in the NICU for as long as possible, so they can be under watch. The prenatal environment and the NICU are very different for the infant. The NICU has bright lights, loud noises from screaming babies, nurses, and machines, which can also have an effect of the baby’s brain development. Because the infants are not accommodated to their senses being aroused, they can become over-stimulated.…

The article, “Prenatal blueprints give an early glimpse of a baby’s developing brain”, by Vaughan Bell most closely relates to chapter three which informs the reader of prenatal development in the womb until childbirth. Bell begins by allowing the reader into his world by explaining his emotions and describing the first ultrasound he is attending alongside his wife. This is a very much normal experience for any expecting parents, since it allows a view into what very soon they will be able to carry in their own hands. Furthermore, the article soon transitions into what could possibly be identified with further research in the field. As the title hints towards, the brain is a very intriguing and mysterious aspect of the developing fetus, which in turn makes it the point of interest for many scientists.…

The sensitive period of life is a time of development when humans are susceptible to certain stimuli in their environments. However, the effects of these stimuli can be reversed (Feldman, R.S., 2015, p. 96). The treatment of this infant may be different in the personal household than in public. The mother’s use of teratogens, or harmful substances that may cause birth defects, whether or not they are visible is crucial in the health of this infant (Feldman, R.S., 2015, p. 63). During this time, it is also important for the infant to create a trusting relationship with the caregiver.…

There is an ongoing research debating about the correlation between ADHD and smoking mothers. Researchers Sharon Milberger, Joseph Biederman, Stephan V. Faraone, Lisa Chen, and Janice Jones conducted a study to analyze the positive connection of ADHD and smoking mothers. The study, Is Material Smoking During Pregnancy a Risk Factor for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in Children? was published in 1996 by The American Journal Of Psychiatry. Although the research offered some validity to the smoking argument for ADHD it left much speculation and unanswered questions that need to be addressed.
