Premature Promotion In Elementary School

Improved Essays
Should Elementary school students who have not successfully passed the previous grade still be admitted to the next grade? People on the side of the debate arguing for the promotion say, holding them back will hurt their development, and self-esteem. However, the effects of a premature promotion will hurt the child more than help. This is because children will be behind, they can not teach themselves, and holding them back will teach then a quality life lesson. People arguing for grade promotion say, “holding them back will hurt their self esteem or stunt their development.” That may be true in some cases, but for the most part those students wouldn’t be too effected by getting held back. Contrary to the development arguement, schools would

As we have seen with No Child Left Behind schools have incentive to push low performing students out. Due to lack of resources these low performing students are often students of color. Zero tolerance policies and unfair suspension policies targeting low income students cause this push out. Zero tolerance policies on drugs, weapons, truancy are all examples of how schools push out low performing students. While on the surface these rules seem fair, under these policies there is no case by case basis.…

Has anyone thought of school and been like “Hmm, professors might give them a better grade if they complain to her about how they feel they did a better job at that assignment?” Or how about, “Wow there is so much free time from studying that they should just all go get drunk?” Says no student ever. But truthfully after reading “Grade Inflation Gone Wild” by Stuart Rojstaczer and “Doesn’t Anyone Get a C Anymore” by Phil Primack that is apparently the mentality that some people involved in school system has adapted, students and professors; which will be discussed in this essay. Fourth, public esteems for schools would increase. In addition, elementary schools would change because students would find out early they had better learn something or risk flunking out later. And lastly, the cost that comes with enforcing compulsory education would be eliminated. I agree with Sipher that with the abolishment of these laws, students will receive the best possible education. I also believe that this can and will show students the seriousness behind school.…

This piece of work shows that although these students may possess many great features such as being intelligent, respectful and hardworking, all the effects are not so positive. Students should be respectful but not be afraid to challenge their authoritative figures, they should not be forced to learn a variety of things against their will nor be walked through life instead of being independent, and if they do have to learn certain subjects then they should also be taught how to build character. We live in an age where everyone is okay with being ordered around just to get that good grade or promotion. Society is so used to being told what to do that at times they may not even realize that most decisions they make are not their own. Also though students may be getting more intelligent, knowledge and following rules does not make someone a great person, character does.…

During my senior year, Mr.Davies once said, ¨achievement implies struggle.¨ However, I believe that not every student or person is able to overcome the struggles they face. Therefore, not every student will be able to reach the achievement that they truly desire for. Children all over the world attend school each and everyday throughout America.…

Therefore, like pennies, even though letter grades are our tradition, since it is not reflective, schools shouldn’t keep on using it. According to an education expert Alfie Kohn, "letter grades are not only unnecessary but harmful” (Long). Research shows that the students receiving letters and percentage grades do not try to master what they learn, but only seeks better grades. Also, it does not reflect on the students' learning and improvements.…

It’s easy for someone to say “how is this going to even affect the student’s”. People will argue that this will only distract the students more than they already are. This is going to sound harsh, but this will eliminate the students who want to and are focused and want to learn and from the students who do not care about their education. There will be a drop in students who are failing and an increase on the students who have always been focused but struggled on their own. In “Marita’s Bargain” it shows how students education is affected by poverty.…

This is why vertical articulation is so important Lindy. It is subsequently beneficial when grade levels talk with each other and pass down high-quality teaching pedagogy. This ensures students will maintain strategies that are successful. I think teachers should continue those foundational skill taught in the lower grades. When this happens teachers tend to bypass ineffective teaching practices and continue effective practices such as, goal setting, which has been proven to enhance academic achievement for all students.…

Students are smarter than a grade on their report card! In some schools students are given complete anecdotal evaluations instead of report card grades, where the teachers give written comments and they have a meeting. A large group of people agree for reasons such as how it will boost student’s confidence or how grades put extra pressure on a student. Some also agree grades don't completely measure everything that a student is capable of, and some say grades make students lazy. There are lots of reasons that anecdotal evaluations are better than report cards.…

Social Promotion is a very controversial topic amongst all social classes. Advancement of ones child to the next level should be an accomplishment of the previous grades requirements and not a mandatory movement into the next grade level. This single action teaches students many things about life and one of them is there is no requirement for success, its merely given to anyone that shows up wanting it. There are many underlining reasons behind why a school would or would not promote this educational style but those that promote it in my opinion do not have the best interests of the students in mind. This is a cop out for an education system to hold any kind of a standard.…
