Premature Infants: A Case Study

Improved Essays
A delivery of baby before 37 weeks is considered premature. Due to an immature respiratory system, a baby may have trouble breathing. Before the baby is born, the lungs are filled with a liquid that helps them to develop and grow, however during birth, this fluid is absorbed so that they can take in the surrounding air (Breathing support for premature babies n.d.). Premature infants are at high risk for developing breathing problems because their lungs are not mature enough to make this adjustment.
Preterm babies who are surfactant deficiency, may develop respiratory distress syndrome (Premature Birth, 2014). This is because the lungs cannot expand and contract normally. Babies do not usually begin producing surfactant until about the 30th

However, it is more common in infants delivered via C-section (especially if delivery takes place before the onset of labor). The reason it is more common in infants delivered through C-section is because, the fluid in the lungs that is resorbed during labor doesn’t happen. Infants present shortly after birth with tachypnea and occasionally grunting and nasal flaring.…

Antenatal corticosteroids (ACS), including Betamethasone, are useful for promoting lung maturation in preterm infants, and have also been shown to reduce the incidence of other neonatal morbidities. Due to the lack of research on ASC on late preterm infants and the implication that the majority of late preterm infants have minimal complications, ACS are primarily given between 24 and 34 weeks gestation.…

Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is the unexpected death of an infant from one month to twelve months of age that cannot be explained even after a thorough investigation (Schnitzer, Covington & Dykstra, 2012). Although the death cannot always be explained, most SIDS cases are believed to be a result of accidental suffocation. Common causes include inappropriate sleep position, bed sharing, and having extra blankets or soft bedding in the bassinet (Schnitzer et al., 2012).…
