Throughout this literature review we will analyze and compare articles that provide the possible effects as to why teenagers are having sex at a younger age such as peer pressure and social media. We will also provide significant statistics and articles that demonstrate the effects of unprepared teenage sex including teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.
Literature Review First of all, we can see how premarital sex has increased over the years. In the novel Modern Romance, the researchers described that romance and love were significantly affected by technology. (Ansari, 2015) In previous decades, people would marry and start a family with a person that was convenient, however during our modern time people would rather explore and have fun until they find their soulmate. The term fun in this novel is defined by individuals hooking up with others. This clearly explains why over the years’ premarital sex has steadily increased and became more passable in our society because more and more individuals continue to practice it. The article on Student’s Perceptions of Peer Influences highlights that there are three main influences in an individual’s life those being, religion, parental, and peer influence (Dean,2010). The researcher conducted a questionnaire that asked the student what were their social influences before and after entering college. Although, the student answered that they felt they were not too influenced by any these three factors. The data did come back to show that peer influence, is by far the most influential out of all three. The reason for this is because individuals want to fit in and feel as if they belong to a group therefore, they will do just about anything in order to fit in into the peers’ group (Dean,2010). This study helps emphasize that although you were raised with different views and guidance, if one was pressured to have sex even if they did not desire it, they would do it. The study helps us view that individuals especially teenagers get caught up in peer pressure and would go to drastic measures in order for them to want to be a part of a crowd. The weakness in this article was that it was too broad and it rarely have any specific information.
