The chapter begins with the historic achievement of Barack Obama and ends with the differing circumstances/perceptions of the Rev. Jesse Jackson and his son Congressman Jesse Jackson III. Race is the classification of humans. While science has demonstrated that the concept of "race" is an illusion, it is still a very powerful illusion that shapes the way that humans act and think. America has not always the great country we have been lead to believe. Since the end of the civil war, racism against blacks grew greater and greater with every passing day making it harder for these people to live their lives. This leads to the unfair treatment of immigrants trying to find a new life in America after being pushed out of their countries by poverty, revolution, and starvation. These events happen with an incompetent government only interested in doing anything to benefit itself. America has treated the people living within and arriving at the country with discrimination with an incompetent government.…

Flashback to civil war time, you have the north and south separated because of one thing: their view on skin color. The north viewed skin color not as an important topic, but the south couldn’t fathom have dark skinned people helping them, which caused them to separate themselves from blacks. Prejudice is a topic that people back then used to differ one human being to another human being, and in today’s world people still judge or criticize people on their beliefs, appearance, or actions. Prejudice can be as simple as if someone is a male or female, or as serious as being black or white. The question, we as people have to think to ourselves is, why we make such serious judgements on certain people, or groups without actually knowing them.…

Why is racism so deeply rooted among American history? Why is something as simple as skin color such subject to prejudice and discrimination in today’s society? The United States of America is built off of cruel acts of slavery and racism. So many white Americans did not realize that the acts they performed were horribly wrong and inhumane. They excused themselves simply because darker skin meant that that person was also inferior.…

It has been over 70 years since the horrific, senseless and disgusting event of the Nazi holocaust where over 4 million Jews were murdered simply for the crime of being Jewish. All over the world, nations were shocked at the horrific and barbaric event and swore that such an act of genocide would not happen again. Yet here we are in the 21 century witnessing on a daily basis the death and destruction of thousands of individuals, purely because they choose to believe in a different religion or are of a particular race or religion. Prejudice and discrimination is a product of society and is learned behaviour not an inherited genetic disposition. It has existed since the beginning of time.…

Sadly and unmistakably, there are examples of prejudice everywhere for reasons that are far more complicated then a person would think. Prejudice ideas come from ones spiritual beliefs, cultural background, strengths or weaknesses, interest and hobbies, physical features, and sexual gender orientation or preference. Although many of these topics can be very controversial, sexual gender orientation or preference is a commonly seen as prejudice in today’s society. For example, sexual orientation and preference can greatly affect a persons job opportunity. When applying for a job and a person is a homosexual, bisexual, or asexual, their employer may treat them differently or will not offer the same benefits as they would to heterosexual employees.…

This essay will discuss the reasons as to why prejudice still continues to occur despite there being social sanctions against it. The essay supports this notion by first defining what prejudice is; the different categories of prejudice – and discussing two of these examples briefly; followed by explanations for prejudice, by discussing individual explanations, social explanations and finally the different social cognitive explanations as to why prejudice still exists. The definition of prejudice is identified differently in a number of texts, but most have a similar meaning behind them, Abrams (2010) defines prejudice as “…bias which devalues people because of their perceived membership of a social group…” Although prejudice may not be perceived…
