Prejudice And Stereotypes: Video Analysis

Improved Essays
Both of these videos demonstrated the consequences of prejudice and stereotypes. In the first video, prejudice, lack of understanding and acceptance was on full display. I believe because the participants were children, it should have made the situation easier for adults to step in and give parental discipline. However, still only a small percentage of adults in this experiment, felt compelled to intervene and stop the unjust situation, some even tried to educate the bullies about their prejudice ways. This situation is a microcosm of why prejudice exists in our society; most of the people refuse to intervene. Therefore, in some way their non-action condones the behavior of the two young bullies.
In the second video, you can see stereotypes

I thought the video, A Class Divided, did an excellent job of illustrating the damage that discrimination can do. From the start of the exercise I, who was just watching an old video, became very uncomfortable and sickened by the feeling I had. As I watched the uncomfortable feeling blanket those children, I became angry. I don’t think I could do what the teacher did. I wanted to hug the kids.…

Minorities are to blame for everything wrong in the world. That statement is what many satirists are writing about. Satirists are running with the idea of mocking racists ideals. Carlos Hoyt Jr., a social-work teacher, depicts racism as a term originally crafted to “frame a phenomenon that, by the early part of the 20th century (having emerged in the 19th century enterprise of classifying peoples according to a racial hierarchy) was powerful, distinct, and in need of nomenclature” (225). Satirists are addressing police brutality, discrimination, criminal injustice, and overall bias.…

There is no question that celebrities impact the choices children make. By their nature, celebrities enjoy a rare visibility not achieved by many. Many have used that asset to promote awareness and garner support for international diplomacy, raise money for charities and encourage people to adopt healthier habits. I believe these efforts can be beneficial, however, I disagree with Beyonce's video and the message it promotes. Obesity is a complicated issue often rooted in negative emotions.…

The video concepts shown in “Race—The Power of an Illusion” provides evidence that our current definition of race is not a fact of biological differences. In the beginning of the video, a lab teacher performed a DNA workshop to examine human genetic variation by analyzing the participant’s genetic similarities and differences in correspondence to their individual phenotypic properties (e.g., skin color, hair, facial and body shape). To get to the specific point, the evidence suggested that despite the similarities or differences in observable appearances of humans, peoples of all geographical locations have overlapping genes—meaning that a single distinct genetic marker has not been discovered that distinguishes one “racial group” from another. Exploring even deeper in understanding how race is a biological myth, out of our 3 billion some nucleotides contain within our body, there is a 3 million nucleotide difference on average from person to person. Consequently, there is genetic variation among our race, but it is a miniscule amount of only .001% and too small to contribute to the so called reality of “races”.…

What the video does is that it shows us our past and how this entire topic of racism came to be as well as the impact of our ancestor’s actions on the peoples and cultures of the world. Evidence that is sighted are numerous historical events like the abolitionist efforts made by the churches of Europe and the Holocaust examining the believed notion of German Arian cultural superiority over lesser groups like Jewish families. Another area that is examined was the extermination and great repression of aboriginal/native groups during the time period of colonization. This destructive behavior was truly a terrible point in history with colonial expansionism either killing or assimilating native populations. Examples of this are the extinction of the native Tasmanian people, the genocide of countless American Indians, and the partial formation of the slave trade in African Colonies.…

Have you ever wanted to stand on top of a mountain with a gigantic megaphone embraced in your hands shouting the iconic quote, “You know my name, not my story!” People may have their own judgements and interpretations about your life, but nobody knows you better than yourself. Although this is the case, it’s not the case when it comes to the platform we all count on for news and entertainment, especially when it comes to the topic of race—the mainstream media. The real question is: do racial stereotypes still dominate our western media? Why and how these stereotypes and misrepresentations of race become apparent initially is what should be discussed.…

In this documentary, I learned that we are more alike than we are different. I witnessed many different races of people that were linked to each other by more than just their skin color, it was amazing to see. I also witnessed many points in the video that directly related to the chapter we have been discussing in class. It related to sociological concepts of race: prejudice, discrimination, and multiculturalism and I also was happy with society watching this video because we have come so far as a society in regard to race.…

Stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination has been a core topic in social psychological research in an attempt to understand the origins of biases and impact on groups and individuals (Dagner & Dalege, 2013). The terms prejudice, discrimination, and stereotype, are often used mutually in daily dialogue. Stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination are biases that contribute to the creation of social inequality in the society (Fiske, 2008). Most often people are biased against other individuals outside of their social connection, displaying stereotypical behaviors, showing prejudice and discrimination.
