Prejudice And Racism In 'Black Lives Matter'

Improved Essays
Out of all the possible ways to see this quote you must understand that it didn't come because someone just wanted to say it. We all live in a country where racism is real. It can be shown in explicit and subtle forms and all of this causes the black race to be uncertain and afraid sometimes. The way I see “Black Lives Matter” is a symbol made to reassure the black community that they are strong and able. No one can understand their culture, their ways and their life like they can. Even when going out places and realizing that you're different than another shouldn't cause you to change yourself just to fit in, but it should create a stronger connection and bond with ones that are alike, while fostering new connections with those who are unalike.

In the Summer of 2013, the Black Lives Matter movement came to fruition in the wake of George Zimmerman’s acquittal in the shooting of Trayvon Martin, a young and unarmed black male. Since then, the movement has demonstrated against other deaths of many black men believed to have been victims of police brutality. Despite the scrutiny behind police practices such as the chokehold and racial profiling, which are both deemed illegal, the police have not changed these practices and instead made them legal under different names such as the “headlock” and the “drug courier profile”. In response to the Black Lives Matter movement and the 2014 killings of NYPD officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu, the Blue Lives Matter movement was created. Instead…

The Black Lives Matter movement has swept the nation ever since the unjustified murdering of Trayvon Martin in 2012. During this time African Americans and other minorities were vulnerable and frightened yet came together across the world to make a drastic difference for the justice of these innocent young and old lives. This harmless phenomenon has been recently targeted as being “racist” and a “hate group” yet the whole meaning of the name and purpose is to remind everyone that black lives matter too. For example, the Baltimore riots that occurred in the spring of 2015, were only trying to push the importance of Black lives not completely destroy their city and rebel. The significance of this is crucial in this day and age due to the injustices of the court and police system, we’re only trying to reiterate something that should be given to all people at birth.…

There is a negative reputation linked to both, the BLM movement in addition to the ALM supporters; solely because of their physical/verbal actions. I do not wholeheartedly believe that either group is more correct than the other; nor can I agree with the entirety of their messages, or how they portray their ideals to society. Most of the members of these groups fail to recognize the importance of unification and mediation. Although black men and women in this country have suffered from a historical standpoint the times have changed, yet racism does still exist in an evolved form, there is a preconceived expectation, that is unfortunately linked to perspective of an individuals regard for a particular race.…

The Black Lives Matter Movement is for a good reason, it’s not that all lives don’t matter, which they do, it's that black lives have been treated like they don’t matter for a long time. We, as Americans, need to redefine the way we treat others and what they believe in. According to Brent Staples, author of Black Men and Public Space, he is treated like a thug, Staples can’t be himself in the street. Staples is misinterpreted by white women everyday for a rapist, thug, and things much worse, “To her, the youngish black man - a broad six feet two inches with a beard and billowing hair seemed menacingly close.” Staples couldn’t even walk near someone without being ridiculed about his appearance.…

It’s not difficult to see how racism is seen today. Or to see how much coverage that takes place when something has happened in public races. Charles M. Blow said, “Racial inequality is not a trendy issue; it is an entrenched issue”, in his article, “The State of Race in America.” Even before the 2000’s racism has always been an important topic including slavery since the early 1900’s, racism hasn’t changed as far as it not existing as it is. In an article, “In The Black Lives Matter Era...,” by Erin Aubury Kaplan she explains that there isn’t enough discussion towards the devaluing of black people that perpetuates bad policing descends from slavery and that the national trauma from that is too often passed by as a terrible past but then it’s an isolated event in time that is done, over with and only tangentially bearing on our national consciousness now.…

People should not purposely change things about themselves to fit in with a certain group of people. They should be content with who they are, even if it takes time to accept it. People who are true to themselves are much happier than people that are trying to be someone else. We, as people, are not defined by what others think of us. Attempting to change who you are to fit in with others is unnecessary and can take a toll on a person’s happiness.…

A big topic that has risen in the past year is racism. Kathleen McCarthy, President of Smith College, sent an email to her students regarding to the deaths of two boys, Eric Garner and Michael Brown. In the email, she stated that all lives matter, this caused many students to criticize her for referring to the opposition of the saying “Black Lives Matter”. Many police officers today are now being criticized and presumed guilty when approaching any black man that is in the wrong. This kind of behavior should not be happening because it is causing our law enforcement not to be able to do their jobs to the best of their abilities.…
