During chapter 7, I found it very disappointing that I was unfamiliar with the different types of racism, even though I am a person of color. What I found even more disappointing is that I could name people who I believed fit in the racism categories: concept, symbolic, aversive and micro-inequities,

Before any sports event it is common that there will be a specific song played to honor America and those brave people who have fought for the freedom we have today. For this song it is also common for people to stand, take off their hats, and maybe even put their hand on their heart out of respect for the men and women who have served our country over the years. Those men and women have fought for our freedom and it is our way as citizens of a free country, to show respect and give thanks by these simple gestures while the National Anthem is being played. This has never been a topic of debate until recent outbreaks of discord throughout America due to racial inequality. Race is one of the most contentious topics in today’s society, and the…

Racism has turned our society into one full of hate and discrimination based of skin color and cultural beliefs. Unfortunately, discrimination has done more than just separate individuals socially it has also divided them into high and low economic classes. We have created a society in which people who are born into lower classes are unable to climb the social ladder and reach an elite economic status. Our society has made it almost impossible for those who are not in power to ever reach such a position. We have created a society in which those who are suffering will continue to suffer and be looked at as a having no value or ability to contribute to the success of the economy and structure of society.…

A major theme in this section is the American struggle with racism. The chapter begins with the historic achievement of Barack Obama and ends with the differing circumstances/perceptions of the Rev. Jesse Jackson and his son Congressman Jesse Jackson III. Race is the classification of humans. While science has demonstrated that the concept of "race" is an illusion, it is still a very powerful illusion that shapes the way that humans act and think. "This is our first and most fundamental American Argument: Who, in our constitutional scheme, is a 'person'?"…

Minorities are to blame for everything wrong in the world. That statement is what many satirists are writing about. Satirists are running with the idea of mocking racists ideals. Carlos Hoyt Jr., a social-work teacher, depicts racism as a term originally crafted to “frame a phenomenon that, by the early part of the 20th century (having emerged in the 19th century enterprise of classifying peoples according to a racial hierarchy) was powerful, distinct, and in need of nomenclature” (225). Satirists are addressing police brutality, discrimination, criminal injustice, and overall bias.…

Most people have fears of monsters and ghouls attacking them in dreams as a young child. As an African-American, the horror is a lot more realistic in many cases. No reports have shown anyone being killed by a monster or a ghoul. However, countless black men and women have lost their lives to police brutality and racism. A traffic stop shouldn’t be a dangerous event, but too often it has, and because of this many lives have been lost due to racism in our country.…

Racism has been scientifically divided into two common themes psychological pathology and intellectual inferiority. The brains cognitive response ties into both themes and determines how the individual would perceive racism. Experiments and extensive research has been provided to support the evidence that the brains cognitive response has influence over the judgment of an individual’s thoughts. Shaunacy Ferro published a few articles with Popular Science that helps break down the process of understanding what racism is perceived as.…

So there were three sources for this weeks reading and viewing. All three had different thesis statements that tighter I believe cover a majority of cultural issues that we face today as a society. First we have the video that is titled “Racism a history part 2”, what this video introduces the humble beginnings of the abolitionist movement in and throughout history! Then this week we were also asked to read chapter one of “Landscape and Race in the united States”. The main argument of this chapter is the basic over view of the book itself that claims that the aspect of race is always in the landscape of the US to some degree.…

“Without words we should scarcely be able to form categories at all” (324). If we weren’t able to speak then people wouldn’t be labeled or subjected to a category. In Gordon Allport 's “Language of Prejudice”, he states that labels subjects a person to one aspect of their appearance. A person shouldn’t be looked at as being in a group but as an individual, everyone is different. Once a individual is given a label, that’s what overlooks every other feature an individual may have.…

I am a young black woman. My experiences are shaped by multiple factors such as sex, gender, race, class, geography, culture, income, education, dis-ability, sexual orientation, ethnicity, and religion, to name a few. My social location and subject positioning are the lenses in which I understand the world around me. My intersections combine in the creation of experiences that are personal to me, but I am more than the sum of all my parts. However, systems and processes of oppression dictate when and where my many identities will intersect.…

Why is racism so deeply rooted among American history? Why is something as simple as skin color such subject to prejudice and discrimination in today’s society? The United States of America is built off of cruel acts of slavery and racism. So many white Americans did not realize that the acts they performed were horribly wrong and inhumane. They excused themselves simply because darker skin meant that that person was also inferior.…

The video, Overt Racial Prejudice, made me take a hard look at our world, my world, and think about the question, Are you a racist? I know deep in my being that I do not hold racist beliefs but I do live in a racist society and like it or not, was brought up in a covertly and overtly racist community. I truly got negative physical symptoms when the bumper sticker was shown several times on the video.
