Prejudice And Racial Stereotypes Of Hollywood As White Hollywood

Decent Essays
Hispanics often fill the roles of maids and gardeners. The geeks and math wizards are filled by Asian men. Middle Eastern people are often depicted as the terrorists. Hollywood by far seems to have more caucasian roles than any other race some even referring to Hollywood as White Hollywood. Even then a white man primary fills the roles of the main characters which includes the heroes, jocks, and men of power. Hollywood is an example of institutional racism because they only give roles out depending on what racial stereotypes the person fits into. Not every movie or TV show fills these racial stereotypes, but Hollywood sure has plenty of them.

Stereotypes of people of color and minority races have been around for many years, and have proved themselves to dominate the perception of people of color in everyday life. Films portray people of color as they are perceived by white Americans, not how they truly are, unique. Film has only dirtied the minority races’ image over time, though if the movies were not made by other Americans, they were more accurate to their race. Stereotypes of Asians have been around for a long time, ever since Asians were introduced. Stereotypes such as Asian students are smarter, Asian women are more exotic and tend to wait on men, Asian women are submissive, Asian people are all from China, and many others.…

It has been long recognized that we still experience prejudice and racial problems in the entertainment world, particularly the film industry. First of all, films still harbor prejudice motives which can be seen in their unfair casting standards. Also, they continually choose to stay unadapt with the times when they display their lack of knowledge by portraying inaccurate cultural stereotypes. Lastly, the film industry unknowingly wear their feelings in plain sight by having biased award nominations. This is a problem with film, they will portray or cast according to what believe what society want to see or support.…

Hollywood misrepresents Asians by placing racially stereotyped characters and place a Non-Asian actor to fill in Asian roles in films, which creates false depictions of Asians and Asian cultures. In the film industry, Casting Directors hire popular Non-Asian actors than Asian actors just solely based off of popularity. The community of Asians face hardship because of racial stereotype being depicted in the wide-screen. Without an abundance of Asians in the Media, Asians can not be represented properly because of the lack of Asians casted in Hollywood films and TV shows. Asian Actors can not receive roles because of producers casting Non-Asians actors, which leads to “Yellow Face”.…

In television shows black people always play a criminal, someone loud and rombonxious, or any other character that reflects poorly on them. The Asian americans are always in a family setting where their parents only care about text book grades, and Latin americans are always loud and feisty. The white people in tv shows always play a role that will eventually reflect some good on their character, and they will come out being on the top majority of the time. This may not seem like a problem, but these type casting roles do not showcase all aspects of their cultures. There are black people who are not loud and criminalistic.…

Not only is this noticeable in movies with ‘real actors’ but also in animation. An example of this would be in Shrek. Not only are the villagers, queens, kings, and such white but the only distinctly African American actor and voice is represented through a slave donkey. As the series continues this donkey also takes a potion to become beautiful and it turns him into a white horse. You can also see a lack of diversity in the famous Breakfast Club.…

In the film Ethnic Notions, African-Americans were poorly portrayed in many different forms of negative stereotypes from the past. These stereotypes were that of a mammy, coon, Uncle Tom, sambo, pickaninnys, and the brute. Even though these racist caricatures were popular in the past unfortunately some forms of them still exist today. The mammy was portrayed as black older woman who was fat, obedient, eager, and loyal.…

    Inequality In Movies

In the last decade, Americans have become increasingly aware of the opportunity and wage gaps between racial minorities and females and their Caucasian, male counterparts. One of the areas most affected by this prejudice is the film industry in Hollywood. In this industry, talented members of minorities receive significantly fewer speaking parts and smaller wages than members of the majority. We must put an end to this troublesome trend because every actor deserves to experience the same chance at success, regardless of their gender or race. In order to combat the issue of inequality, we must educate everyone, including movie-goers, white actors, and white filmmakers, about the lack of minorities in film and get minorities more involved in…

In an article by Ann Hollifield, she states some of the possible reasons why there aren 't a lot of minorities in the acting workplace which could lead to why there isn 't a lot of diversity on television. The diversity declines in large television markets has been argued that minorities have to face a "glass ceiling" which makes it more difficult for minorities to move up in the industries. It was also said that another factor this entails is the size of the organization and how many minorities they are actually able to hire (Hollifield, 2016). Moreover, I don 't feel that it is entirely the networks fault because some networks might actually want to incorporate diversity into their television shows but may not have the available actors and actresses for the part. The New York Times did a questionnaire for students to see their view on television being too White.…

Research has shown that there has been no legal action taken to address whitewashing in Hollywood and that there have been no laws to prevent it. However, the abundance of criticism that has been given regarding whitewashing has had effects on whitewashing in films and has lessened it happening more so every year. In Hollywood’s early years, whitewashing was extremely prevalent in films and while we can still see whitewashing in today’s films, there has been a significant difference made ever since the amount of disparagement regarding the whitewashing of roles meant to be played by people of color (Screen Rant, 2015). These critics have given blunt commentary on the whitewashing in Hollywood films. The Variety (2015) points out that The Martian…
