Undoubtedly, In To Kill a Mockingbird, everyone is prejudice, from racism all the way to social class. Harper Lee introduces prejudice in a whole new way that we have never seen or heard of before. Prejudice is defined as “a preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience.” It also means “harm or injury that results from some action or judgment.” Most people in this world are prejudice because we are always judging people by the things they wear or the stuff they do. Yes, she thinks it is important for Scout to act like a young lady, but she has no reason to treat Scout and anybody else like that. Scout’s aunt feels it’s her responsibility to raise Scout to be a young woman since she never had “a motherly figure.” In the book she says to Scout, “it would be best for you to have some feminine influence.” (140) Aunt Alexandra thinks her way is right because she is used to getting her way and it has never changed. Aunt Alexandra was raised with boarding school manners and that’s the way she is going to teach Scout. The Finch family is well respected and Aunt Alexandra doesn’t want it to change. Atticus tries to get Scout to understand that that is just the way she is and she can’t change. Most of the time Atticus does not agree with her because she is pushing the kids too hard. She thinks that Atticus is too easy on them and that they need a little discipline. On the website, “enotes”, it says that Scout learns many negative aspects from her aunt especially with her misplaced pride concerning previous generations of the family. Aunt Alexandra is part of a social class that has boarding school manners. She doesn’t like the way the kids are being raised because they lack the kind of pride that she has. Racism plays a big part in this because the book mainly talks about Tom Robinson’s court case. The people in the courtroom look at him and automatically think he is guilty just because his skin is a little darker. The court believes Bob Ewell even though they know he is not a man to trust or rely on, but they do it because the color of his skin. The way that Jem and Scout are raised is based on their father’s faith and beliefs. Atticus takes his kids to church every Sunday and tries his best, but it’s just not good enough in his sister’s eyes. The whole town of Maycomb is based around one religion that they follow without any questions.
