I had been sitting at the gate for a good hour, killing time while waiting for my flight to Montreal to board. I did not want to be here. I had initially refused this trip but had ultimately been forced into it by the chief pilot. Now I was to position to Montreal with an Italian crew I had never met to fly an aircraft to Mexico the next day. In the Munich airport, I was waiting for them to arrive. My phone rang. “Ciao Nick! It's Ernesto. Are you at the gate?” I waved, we saw each other and greeted one another. Ernesto was a classy man in his sixties with a heavy Italian accent, wavy white hair and thick glasses. “Hello, nice to meet you. ” said Martina as she stood up and, as it is customary in Europe, greeted me with a kiss on both cheeks. “Nice to meet you as well, ” I replied with a smile. Martina was a tall, svelte, well dressed and dolled up young woman. With her dark hair, brown eyes and facial traits, you couldn't confuse her for anything else but an Italian. As I believe most men often do when meeting a new person of the opposite sex, I proceeded to rank her on my personal attraction scale. The practice of this fantasy exercise consists in a quick evaluation of the physical, behavioral and overall attractiveness of that person. Martina didn't score high. Although physically attractive, I found her too dolled up, too young, probably mid twenties, and likely not super interesting to talk to as she was already back checking her phone while I was talking with Ernesto. We started to line up to board. “ Are we sitting near one another?” asked Martina. “Doesn't look like it. ” I replied comparing Ernesto's and my seat assignments. “Maybe we can see once on board if the flight is not too full. ” she replied. As we entered the cabin, we were shown the direction to our seats. I went down the far ail while Martina and Ernesto took the first ail on the right. As I settle down on what seemed a full flight, I was preparing for a long journey in the middle seat. I put the headphones on and started to browse for movies. Soon the aircraft taxied out and not long after we were airborne. “DING” made the fasten seatbelt sign as it turned off. “Mister Holmes” would be my first movie. I pressed play. A few minutes later, I felt a tap on my shoulder. “I found seats together, if you want to join us?” said Martina leaning towards me. “Why not?” I replied.
