I had been sitting at the gate for a good hour, killing time while waiting for my flight to Montreal to board. I did not want to be here. I had initially refused this trip but had ultimately been forced into it by the chief pilot. Now I was to position to Montreal with an Italian crew I had never met to fly an aircraft to Mexico the next day. In the Munich airport, I was waiting for them to arrive. My phone rang. “Ciao Nick! It's Ernesto. Are you at the gate?” I waved, we saw each other and greeted one another. Ernesto was a classy man in his sixties with a heavy Italian accent, wavy white hair and thick glasses. He would be the captain on this trip. As we walked back chatting, we approached a woman seated, texting on her phone. “Nick, this …show more content…
“Hello, nice to meet you. ” said Martina as she stood up and, as it is customary in Europe, greeted me with a kiss on both cheeks. “Nice to meet you as well, ” I replied with a smile. Martina was a tall, svelte, well dressed and dolled up young woman. With her dark hair, brown eyes and facial traits, you couldn't confuse her for anything else but an Italian. As I believe most men often do when meeting a new person of the opposite sex, I proceeded to rank her on my personal attraction scale. The practice of this fantasy exercise consists in a quick evaluation of the physical, behavioral and overall attractiveness of that person. Martina didn't score high. Although physically attractive, I found her too dolled up, too young, probably mid twenties, and likely not super interesting to talk to as she was already back checking her phone while I was talking with Ernesto. Overall impression: superficial and …show more content…
” sounded the speakers. We started to line up to board. “ Are we sitting near one another?” asked Martina. “Doesn't look like it. ” I replied comparing Ernesto's and my seat assignments. “Maybe we can see once on board if the flight is not too full. ” she replied. As we entered the cabin, we were shown the direction to our seats. I went down the far ail while Martina and Ernesto took the first ail on the right. As I settle down on what seemed a full flight, I was preparing for a long journey in the middle seat. I put the headphones on and started to browse for movies. Soon the aircraft taxied out and not long after we were airborne. “DING” made the fasten seatbelt sign as it turned off. “Mister Holmes” would be my first movie. I pressed play. A few minutes later, I felt a tap on my shoulder. “I found seats together, if you want to join us?” said Martina leaning towards me. “Why not?” I replied. We walked back. “Where is Ernesto?” I asked as we reached the seats. “He is asleep back there. He didn't feel like moving. ” said Martina. Once again I settle down. “Mister Holmes” we said. How far was I in the plot? There we are. Press play. Martina reached in her bag and pulled out a book and a pencil. She started to read and underline passages. This caught my attention. I was expecting some People gossip magazines and not a book, especially not the kind you underline passages from. I removed my headphones. “What are you

In the article I, Racist by John Metta, there are two views regarding racism in the US. The first one is the common White people’s view that they do not admit that they are racist. This view exists because of the fact that racism is getting subtler yet still impactful. The reason for this is because White people now do not have to deal with racism; they are the one in the advantaged position. From the condition that they are in, they interpret that racism does not exist anymore, and responded by not talking and admitting about the truth that they are racist.…

In “Making Privilege and Oppression Happen” in the book Privilege, Power, and Difference, by Allan G. Johnson, he writes how privilege is maintained by discriminating people of different categories and treating them unequally, acting act discriminatory behavior and justifying it. Outright discrimination is not always seen to those acting out discriminatory behavior, but evident to the victims of these unfair treatments. This can be seen in implicit bias, defined by Johnson to be unconscious discrimination. Johnson mentions an Australian study that shows white people are more likely to get a free bus ride, if in need, then people of color, even if dressed “appropriately.” To the bus driver, not giving people of color free rides, is doing the…

Mary Robinson has been an efficacious champion of human rights for more than fifty years. While her eloquent autobiography, Everybody Matters: My Life Giving Voice, is full of interesting lessons about working in the global governance world, three lessons stood out in particular. First, to make a successful career in global politics, you must work with the skills you have and develop those you do not. Second, once you have joined the global governance workforce, support systems are necessary. Finally, the tools the United Nations provides are often insufficient to the complete the goals stated by the United Nations.…

What is reality? Is it a subjective concept, perceived by the individual, and shared with the collective? Or, is it an objective concept, determined by the collective, and imposed on the individual? These are rhetorical questions of course, because the reality of the matter is that there is no way of determining which proposition is irrefutably true. However, from the point of view of the individual, this conclusion begs an intriguing third question―can the collective consider the individual mad, if the individual willfully refuses to recognize objective “realities” which impose restrictions on their abilities to pursue their heart felt existential purpose, if that purpose fuels their desire to live?…

Causes of Prejudice by Vincent N. Parrillo is an article that dove deep into the psychological and sociological standpoint to investigate the causes of prejudice. Parillo focused mostly the sociology standpoint, and he mentions the famous sociologist, Talcott Parsons, who introduces social forces as a variable frustration and occupational structure may produce anxieties and insecurities that create frustration. Is this a paraphrase? If it is, I can tell. Might want to switch it up or add quotations so that it is not plagerism.…

Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston, authors during the Harlem Renaissance, used their poetry and short stories to challenge ideas about race and the division it caused in America. The narrators in Hughes’ “Theme for English B” and Hurston’s “How It Feels to Be Colored Me” are both in the process of exploring their racial identities, yet while the narrator in Hurston’s story embraces her differences, the speaker in Hughes’ poem is more focused on questioning the aspects that cause him and his white classmates to differ. Nonetheless, Hughes and Hurston both use a common theme of racial identity as well as symbolism and the use of metaphor, to explain the struggle of being African-American in the 20th century. In Hughes’ poem “Theme for…
