Over the past few years there has been an alarming amount of incidence of racism and discrimination across this country. It would seem that this issue would be better, but if anything, it has gotten worse. The dreams of Martin Luther King are truly words of comfort during this cycle that is trying to revert back to the painful days of the 60’s. Discrimination hasn’t stopped with color, it extends to religious beliefs, such as the backlash against Muslims, as well as violence to outcast people’s sexual preference. To live in a country that prides itself on freedom, yet still continue the stronghold of inequality and discrimination, is paralyzing this country. As Zadie Smith once stated, “You can't state difference and also state equality. We have to state sameness to understand equality.” We live in a cultural melting pot, but yet we cannot tolerate or accept one another. It seems we are in fear of what isn’t similar, because if anything is different it is alienated. We, as a country must learn to communicate our differences in a peaceful matter, but more than that, we must distinguish the difference in tolerance and acceptance.
