I researched the perception of discrimination and stereotypes relating to college students. Discrimination and stereotyping affects nearly everyone and not just in college. It is hard to escape prejudice and according to my research, stress and alcohol use in college are associated with discrimination. I looked into racial discrimination as well as sexual orientation discrimination. In this review I will highlight what discrimination and stereotyping are, what my research studies showed, and how it relates to student success. Discrimination is defined as the practice of unfairly treating a person or group of people differently from other people or groups of people. This study done by Boynton, O’Hara, Covault, Scott, and Tennen was called “A Mediational Model of Racial Discrimination and Alcohol-Related Problems Among African American College Students.” It was published in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs in 2014. The goal of the study was to examine links between discrimination, alcohol use, and alcohol problems. The researchers surveyed 619 students from a historically Black university. What was found was that discrimination was a significant predictor of alcohol-related problems. For male students, anger was a partial mediator of the link between discrimination and alcohol use. In both men and women, depression also partially mediated the link between discrimination and alcohol problems. Discrimination and poor self-regulation were highly relevant when discussing alcohol-related problems. Done by J.M. Chonody, the study was called “Measuring Sexual Prejudice Against Gay Men and Lesbian Women: Development of the Sexual Prejudice Scale.” It was published in the Journal of Homosexuality in 2013. 851 students participated in this study and different types of analyses indicated a 3 factor solution for each of the sex-specific scales. There were 4 subscales: stereotypes, valuation, affective reaction, and social equality beliefs. Chonody provided evidence of validity of the Sexual Prejudice Scale and showed that there was a strong relation between sexual prejudice and sexism. Chonody established the difference between homophobia and prejudice by stating, “Antigay bias is not homophobia.     All participants were screened beforehand using a modified version of the Kinsey Heterosexual-Homosexual Rating Scale, used to select only participants who reported exclusively heterosexual arousal and experiences; (Adams, Wright, & Lohr, 1996). Participants then took the Index of Homophobia the scale had 25 items; an example of one item asks to participants was, “I would feel nervous being in a group of homosexuals” (Adams, Wright, & Lohr, 1996). Scores range between 0 to 100, participants were then divided into 4 categories based on their scores: 0-25, meant high-grade nonhomophobic men; 26-50, low-grade nonhomophobic men; 51-75, low-grade homophobic men; and 76-100, high-grade homophobic men (Adams, Wright, & Lohr, 1996).
