The Prejudices Against Muslims in Europe
Rifat Serin

One of the continuities in European History is prejudice against Islam and Muslims. This continuity has come from the idea of Europe. According to idea of Europe, the two of the enemies of the Europeans are the Ottomans and Islam. In this manner, the idea of Europe supported crusades attacks against Muslims in the past, and the concept of jihad appeared in the side of Muslims against non-Muslims. Of course, some of Muslims interpreted on jihad very aggressively that they aimed to kill non-Muslims, but most of Muslims did not have any aim like that. Today, Islamic terrorism has the concept of jihad against non-Muslims. Because of this, the Europeans have been afraid of jihad and its outcomes.

Today, a number of Muslims have lived in Europe since they were immigrated to the European countries from their homelands. Houssain Kettani states that Muslim population enlarged in Europe, and an increase up to “6% by 2020” is expected. Mark Brown states that this growing Muslim population would get some rights through by being born in the European countries. This means Muslims born in Europe should be considered Europeans, but they are not considered by the Europeans. Muslims in Europe are only considered that they have hold their rights in Europe. The understanding that the Europeans do not accept Muslims as real Europeans is directly related to prejudice against Muslims. Alec G. Hargreaves’s survey proved that most of the French people declared that they were afraid of being terrorized by Muslims. Was this fear proved with a terrorist attack the end of the last year? Most of people in the world thought like that this attack in French has proved that all Muslims are potentially dangerous to Christian society. But, it has been a wrong proposal and moreover, it is a prejudice because most of Muslims intend to live peacefully in the world. People needs to distinguish Islamic terrorism from Islam. Of course, the Islamic terrorism have harmed humanity since it emerged. …show more content…
Both Muslims and non-Muslims should try to understand each other, Western countries should not appropriate the Islamic terrorism for all of Muslims in the world, and Muslims and non-Muslims should accept their values and customs to have a peaceful world against Islamic terrorism and/or other terror activities. In addition to this, if governments and mass media teach people how to distinguish the Islamic terrorism from Islam and Muslims who have to intend to live peacefully in the world, it would be more humanistic because most of innocent Muslims would get rid of paying the Islamic terrorism’s sins and bad

According to The Student View, some political leaders drive this phobia in order to appeal to the interests and fears of their potential voters. Donald Trump, for instance, appealed to voters’ insecurities about Muslims and tried to exploit that fear so that he can get easily accepted by the American crowd (Source B). After deplorably violent attacks of some Islamic extremists, it is true that numerous people did sow the seeds of Islamophobia, in the past; however, continuous political usage of Islamophobia strongly reinstated the idea of ostracizing the Muslims. Vague generalizations to reconstitute the idea of Muslim threat is also practiced by political commentator Bill O‘Reilly as he specified at Fox News: “But they are not just militants and terrorists. They are Islamic driven killers who protected al Qaeda before the 9/11 attack.…

Due to the lack of job opportunities and education, families in urban communities suffer because it creates tension. In Dorothy Allison’s essay, “A Question of Class,” she explores her identity by focusing on her experiences as what she refers to as “southern white trash”. The inescapable impact of Allison being born in a condition of poverty that this society finds shameful, contemptible and somehow deserved was something that she spent her whole life trying to overcome and deny.…

Ever since the 9/11 attacks happened Muslims and the middle east became the center for hatred and fear. The American people believed that if they focused on observing, better yet “oppressing”, Muslims then they could prevent another terrorist attack. This led to a series of huge changes in the perceptions of Muslims, racial profiling, a large feeling of Islamophobia, or fear of Islamic people swept the nation, and it also led American-Muslims showing what they felt about the attacks and how they were affected, or attacked, as well. “9/11 was not just a tragedy, it was the beginning of a terrible chaos we are still suffering from in the Middle East.” (Obeidallah, 1).…
