On Monday November 16, I received the opportunity to sit down in a Cesarean Birthing Class at the Ester Grossmen Women Center lead by Nirvanni Chatoori, MSN, RNC-MNN at 6pm. A Cesarean Birth is when a baby is delivered through an incision on the mother’s abdomen and of her uterus. This method can be done for mothers with multiple pregnancies, failure of labor to progress, placenta problems, macrosomia, breech presentation maternal infections/ medical conditions. The evening started off with identifying what fetus and mother are qualified for a cesarean section and the advantages and disadvantages that may occur with this procedure. Such as a full-term (39-40 weeks) would have to be the time period of the brain and lungs are fully developed. …show more content…
To me it’s an innovative way of learning, and I was better able to assist the expecting mother and the father with concerns about the procedure that they had because of this prior knowledge. As far as the parents, its just as important because one the mothers from the class was expecting to have her in-laws and the father in the room, she had come to a realization that she had to change and birth plan since the Cesarean is then in an operating room and only one visitor is allowed in. While another mother who has had multiple health issues and had some concerns with being put under general anesthesia, learned that there are other methods of anesthesia that can be used such as local, epidural, spinal, or even a combination of both spinal and epidural to help with the surgery. She was able to obtain a clear understanding and make a final decision that the spinal/epidural black would be the best for her condition. Being that I am a nursing student I was able to learn step by step as to what exactly are the process that can occur with a Cesarean birth, with both animated videos and basic knowledge. Then, to later on in the week during my clinical rotation to see the same process being put into action after seeing two live Cesarean birth. At the end of the day knowledge is

The article, The Score by Atul Gawande, illustrated the history of pregnancy deliveries with the article profiling Elizabeth Rourke and her journey of giving birth to her daughter. The Score is an article where I acquired knowledge from a topic that I knew very little about. For example, the process of how women are in labor and how long they must wait until they are “in labor.” In addition, how long they must wait until their contractions are in a certain pace, “the nurse asked if the contractions were five minutes apart and lasted more than a minute. No.…

The documentary “The Business of Being Born” is an eye-opening film in which home births and midwifery are compared to the aspects of having a hospital birth. Not only does the film focus on these very important pieces to the overall birthing experience, it also portrays similarities and differences between giving birth in America in relation to countries worldwide. With that being said, if one is unfamiliar with any type of birthing experience, one may feel this film is strictly biased towards home birth as the overall message of the movie depicts that for most low-risk, uncomplicated pregnancies, a midwife and home birth is the safest and most cost effective way to have a baby. In terms of comparing obstetric care in the United States to countries worldwide, it very clear that changes can be made.…

In an essay titled “Sage Femme” the author Samantha Tengelitsch uses many rhetorical strategies such as repetition, contrast, imagery, narrative and certain appeals to develop her argument. Tengelitsch use repetition by writing “my children slept soundly, the dog took little notice” several times throughout her essay which helps emphasize the ease of home birth. The description of the room she gave birth in creates imagery and establishes a peaceful visualization for her audience and illustrates her perspective. The author also uses contrast by displaying the negative aspects of giving birth in a hospital compared to giving birth at home.…

The readings for today’s lesson were chapters 3 and 4 from the book “Maternity Rolls” by Heather Kuttai. The chapters tell Kuttai’s journey through pregnancy and childbirth. From what Kuttai states, it seems as if pregnancy was a very difficult time for her, emotionally and physically. It was difficult emotionally because although Kuttai and her spouse were very excited to be pregnant, not everyone was equally excited for or supportive of them. Kuttai states “I saw the man ultrasounds as many opportunities to see the sex, but I was terribly disappointed when my ultrasound technician refused to pass this knowledge on to our doctor, and therefore on to us.…

It is an odd ritual that abortion providers perform – required as a clinical safety measure ... – but it also permits us in an odd way to pay respect to the fetus … even as we simultaneously have complete disregard for it. Then I rushed upstairs to take overnight call on labour and delivery. The first patient that came in was prematurely delivering at 23– 24 weeks… Later...…

A caesarian section (p. 65), also known as a C-section, is another way to deliver a baby, as opposed to a vaginal birth. A C-section is a surgical procedure where an incision is made through the abdominal wall as well as uterus to retrieve the baby. It is important to know this term before giving birth to a child because it may be an option you want to consider or may be suggested in an emergency situation. My mom’s first childbirth to my brother, Kenzie, was an emergency C-section. My mom was expected to give a natural birth, however, my brother had the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck and the doctors suggested a C-section would be the safest option.…

The thoughts of pregnancy and childbirth can provoke emotions of distress, anxiety, excitement, and fulfillment in women, not to mention the course of it. The medicalization of pregnancy and childbirth has allowed women to gain control over the process, by creating a comprehensive birth plan in a form of a guide. The majority of women have an increased amount of options in the settings for their childbirth such as hospitals, birthing centers, and at home. This may enhance the sense comfortability for pregnant women as before the 18th century women chose not to deliver in hospitals for sanitary reasons. Furthermore, women generally have the option of a health care provider during the process of pregnancy and childbirth.…
