Preganglionic Nerve Observation Report

Decent Essays
This prelab was kind of confusing. First we were given a normal case and the information provided explained how sweating in triggered. The way I remember it is that the preganglionic nerve is activated and then will release acetylcholine. This causes the acetylcholine to bind to the nicotine receptors that will cause the receptor to open a channel by changing shape, which allows sodium to flow into the cell. Once full, there is an action potential that that travels down the nerve, which leads to signals that allow acetylcholine to be released; however not all these cells arrive at the listening cell to be cut by the acetylcholinesterase or bound to muscarinic receptors, some wander away. I found this information to be review from lab 5; but,

Efferent sympathetic signals originating from the POAH travel by way of the ipsilateral brainstem through the tegmentum of the pons & the medullary raphe nuclei, which terminate on the preganglionic neurons in the intermediolateral column of the spinal cord (Smith & Johnson, 2016). The efferent signal departs from the ventral horn & passes into the sympathetic trunk via the white ramus communicans (Smith & Johnson, 2016). Efferent signals terminate & act post-synaptically on several effectors, which includes endothelial cells found within cutaneous blood vessels & subcutaneous…

Environmental Bridges and Nicotine Marissa L. Ciluffo University of North Alabama Abstract Nicotine is an addictive parasympathomimetic alkaloid that is found in products such as cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco, and snuff. When someone consumes nicotine, either through smoking, inhaling, or chewing, specific neurotransmitter actions take place within the body and brain. Acetylcholine is replaced by nicotinic receptors, in the neurons, causing the membrane to become depolarized. This continuous action is what caused nicotine dependency.…

Patients with SCI may experience several types of chronic pain, including peripheral and central neuropathic pain. The pain syndromes or disturbing sensations are separated into two broad categories: spontaneous pain (independent of peripheral stimuli, persistent, comes and goes, and can be anything from numbness to burning/cutting like) and peripherally evoked pain (in response to non-noxious or noxious stimuli) (40, 41). Neuropathic pain in SCI can arise from multiple system changes in sensory pathways from dorsal root ganglion (DRG) to cortex. Previous studies have shown in mammals, that injury affecting the axons or soma of sensory neurons, with their soma in the DRG, causes hyperexcitability that can lead to spinal sensitization and neuropathic pain (42, 43, 44, 45). Increasing evidence has also suggested a critical role of the thalamus in the development and maintenance of neuropathic pain.…

The International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) defines neuropathic pain as pain caused by a lesion or disease of the somatosensory nervous system. Neuropathic pain can either be central or peripheral. Central neuropathic pain is caused by a lesion or disease of the central somatosensory nervous system, whereas peripheral pain is caused by a lesion or disease of the peripheral somatosensory nervous system (IASP, 2012). The management of neuropathic pain is challenging because many patients have pain that is refractory to the treatments that are available (Dworkin, 2010).…
