Predator-Prey Lab Report

Decent Essays
A predator is an organism that eats another organism. The purpose of this experiment is to examine natural selection in a model predator prey system. In this experiment we analyzed and examined natural selection in a predator-prey system. There were three types of prey that were mutant in this experiment. The colors of those preys were red, white, and black. The three predator recruits that were used in this experiment were the hand, spoon, and fork technique. Our hypothesis in this experiment is, did any prey species go extinct, and whether or not the prey could change their behavior to reduce susceptibility to predation. The findings of the studies show that by the end of the third and fourth generation the black prey species had gone extinct

During the lab, the predators and prey could not exist without each other, as seen in the last generation where all the organisms ceased to exist. The relationship between the food source and the type of “beak” was that their traits were opposing or complimentary. For example, the spoons were the most effective predator in surviving the lab because they had a larger surface area, therefore were able to pick up any of the beans with ease. The lentils were the most victorious in surviving the lab because they had a small surface area, making them difficult to be caught. The kidney beans were very easily captured, because they were larger and easier to pick up.…

Eating animals has been a regular meal for humans for many centuries, but it has also been opposed by veganists for many years. Although consuming animals has been opposed by vegan aficionados, it has also been a source of controversy because of how factory farming produces the meat we eat in our daily meals. In the book “Eating Animals” we get the sense that the author will be arguing and encouraging veganism, but instead he argues about how the meat we consume is produced. The author Jonathan Safran Foer’s main claim in the book is about boycotting animal factory farming and encouraging traditional husbandry because factory farm animals are stuffed with antibiotics, mutilated, tightly confined, and deprived of stimulation. While traditional…

Writing Assignment #1 Lasiognathus dinema There are a couple misconceptions you might have about evolution and natural selection. The strongest and most important organisms do not survive over the generations. Although evolution occurs due to fitness in an individual or individuals of a species, an organism cannot survive over generations. Fitness is achieved through variations in populations of species through genetic differentiation (Scottville “n.d.”). Since the life cycle of all living organisms is to be born, survive, mate, and die, it is impossible for an organism to live through several generations.…

Evolution has received mostly negative feedback from society, especially from non-scientists. Perhaps, evolution is controversial because it speaks to the beginning of humanity. Controversy originated from individuals’ religious backgrounds and faith in a higher being but they do not consider the definition of evolution. Noted by David Jacobs—Professor of Animal Evolution and Systematics at the University of Cape Town, non-scientists believe evolution states that human evolved from baboons. However, evolution only claims that humans and other non-human primates share a common ancestor (Jacobs, 2015).…
