Most people feels the importance of portraying individuals with a mental disorder in a realistic manner is something that is not often done by the Hollywood, CA film industry. However, in the movie Precious, I believe the media portrayed the character’s mental disorder in a realistic manner by associating the social issues with sexual abuse and eating disorder to trigger the character’s Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). According to National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), PTSD is a mental disorder that is triggered by a terrifying event, for the person may feel stressed or frightened even when they’re no longer in danger (National Institute of Mental Health, 2015). This proves that the character’s mental disorder was portrayed in a realistic manner from all the signs, symptoms, and caused for PTSD. In this paper, I’m going to discuss how this movie accurately portrayed the individual’s mental disorder by the events, treatment, and risk factors were used to make it seem realistic.

Therefore, PTSD risk factor are caused by: living through dangerous events and traumas; getting hurt; feeling helplessness or fear; dealing with extra stress after the event and much more (National Institute of Mental Health, 2015). In the movie, Precious had all those risk factors, for she was always getting abuse by her parents and feeling helplessness. Also, she was dealing with extra stress after the events because she had a baby by her father and was pregnant with another. With all these events, it has triggered her
