Precious Case Study Answers

Precious has many obstacles facing her. Her physical functioning is struggling because she is obese, HIV positive, and is lacking general medical care and attention. She didn’t know how far along she was in her pregnancy with her second child and she didn’t have any prenatal care. Her educational situation is also a challenge. Precious is 16 years old and still in middle school and her reading and writing skills are very weak. She lacks support in her education from her mother, Mary. Mary doesn’t believe that education is important and she tells Precious that she is stupid and is better off living on welfare her whole life. Precious’ financial position is not stable. She is financially dependent on her mother and Precious does not have a job of her own to support herself or her two children. Precious’ emotional well-being is also a concern. Mary has made Precious feel unloved and worthless for almost her entire life. Because of this cruel treatment, Precious most likely has depression and/or anxiety. Safety is yet another problem are for Precious. Her mother has injured and even tried to kill Precious several times putting Precious’ safety at risk. One goal could be to call a clinic or hospital and set up an appointment with a doctor and get a general physical. She should have the appointment within a month. This is important so that a doctor can assess and determine the best route for Precious to take to live the healthiest life she can. The first step Precious could take would be to research and find a hospital by herself, or with the help of her social worker, that will work with her financially and will provide the services she wants.
