Precious: A Short Story

Loud screeches interrupted the serenity in the room.

“Lindsey, grab Precious and shelter yourselves in the living room closet,” my voice was low, but vehement. I ran to the door, the cacophonous sounds becoming nearly intolerable.

Voices started cramming my head. How can I fend off these many zombies? I had to. I took a final look at Lindsey and Precious, turned and reached into the closet beside the main door, and pulled out an AK 12. I could do this. My hand reached for the cold knob, quivering. I bit my lip and tightened my grasp. I took a shallow breath, and opened the door.

Just as the door opened, the stench slapped me in the face. I stepped back, and unleashed an artillery barrage. Unfortunately, it was blindfire. My eyes focused

I had to stay strong. I had lost Logan. I will not lose anyone else. I looked at Precious.

“I won’t let anything happen to you. I promise.”

I turned and ran. I had to reach a safe house. I started my journey, and heard footsteps. I turned, no one. I kept going and reached an apartment. I heard those footsteps again. I turned and saw Logan. Eyes red, skin burnt. I limped as he, or it, walked. I teared up. I could see my husband in the beast. No it’s not your husband. I couldn’t believe it. The eyes were the worst. A pale white, with no pupil. Scars and cuts surrounded his nose and eyes. We stood there paralyzed. We stared into each other. I couldn’t hurt it. It was my husband. No it’s not. Get yourself together. It sped towards me.
I picked up my spear, and winded my arm. How could I do this? He got closer and closer, and I couldn’t gather the courage. Logan pounced on me, and I felt this pain I had never experienced before. I screamed, and pushed him off.

“LOGAN, THIS ISN’T YOU. PLEASE.”

It came for me again, and I kicked him, Logan went back stunned. I heard Precious’s cries. I teared up. Logan pounced again, but not for me. For Precious. I made a promise. I pulled back my spear, and it flew towards Logan. The spear cut right through his flesh, and Logan fell back. Logan was dead. Forever. And now, I was next. I was

I looked at Precious’s face. I made a promise. I cut a large square out of Logan’s clothing. It pained me to do this, but I cut into Logan, my hand covered in blood. I took a large chunk of his organs. I pulled it out. I swallowed down my vomit, my throat burned, along with my nostrils. I took the organs and put it on the cloth. I tied up the cloth, making into a sac. I attached that to the spear, and hung it over my shoulder. I took Precious and put him into the bag I had, and attached the bag to my back. The bag held down the spear. I stood up, and the bag of guts was in front of me, out of my hands reach. I had less than a minute before I changed. I stood, and turned towards the nearest major road. I felt an intense pain in my shoulder, and it spread all over my body. It was happening. The world went black. I was gone. I lied to Precious. I couldn’t protect

As I stared across the bullet-torn battlefield I wondered how I ended up here; hiding behind a crumbling wall, clutching my gun as though it were a lifeline. How the young kid I'd once been now bore a dirty, camouflage patterned uniform. There I was, contemplating my life in the middle of a battle. I shouldn't have been surprised when a hand suddenly shot out in front of my face and smacked me upside the head. It was so unexpected that I nearly stumbled out from behind the rubble and right into the bullet whizzing by.…

The last vestiges of fall had passed and only brown, shriveled leaves remained on the sidewalk. Trees appeared naked, shivering without their blanket of color. Cold air blew through their skinny, lifeless branches, tossing the trees around as though they were mere sticks rather than giants. She shuddered as the chilly wind kissed her brow, leaving a wretched disease of ice and sorrow in its wake. Within this wintry prison there was no joy, there was no warmth, and, above all, there was no diversity.…

The Battle of Liberty (Confederate Victory) The date was September 17, 1861. I remember only because I wrote a letter home that very morning. I could tell early that day that things were brewing, all the men could. Myself and the others sat in a circle around the remnants of the fire waiting for orders to move, like a pack of dogs lingering over the remnants of a meal.…

My friends who were outside seemed to be calling me out, possibly to die with them, but that wasn’t my intent, I wanted to be alone. In times of terror like this, people did crazy things, and if I were to do something crazy, I didn’t want anyone’s eyes but God’s and my own to see it. I quickly knelt on one knee and began to pray for something, anything at all to stop the madness outside. Then I realized that nothing was coming to save any of us, so I decided to end it before the boiling, gelatinous liquid could get me. I walked calmly to the kitchen, pulling open one of the drawers attached to the kitchen island, the squeaking of the wheels was painstaking.…

Beowulf Essay: The Roles Of Grendel's Mother

In Beowulf, Grendel’s mother is not given a name; “Grendel’s mother” is what she is called. She is not given a name because she does not fit into the category of the traditional and conservative women. She has masculine characteristics, which is what men dislike about her. In the story, she is not described in a pleasant way. She was referred to as “Grendel’s fierce mother” (615), later on she was also called “the mighty water witch” (595), and even the “greedy she-wolf” (574).…
