When this song begins the song Farewell to Eliza speaks of a gentleman having to leave the love of his life going far away across the ocean he describes the distance with the world around saying “boundless oceans, roaring wide between my love and me”. After this he goes on to assure the love of his life that even with so much distance between them his heart still stays true to her telling her “ they never, never can divide my heart and soul from thee” this is speaking of the oceans between them also. Then he continues to describe the emotions he is feeling as if he is speaking directly to her in person and he is back at home with her telling her goodbye once more. When these authors wrote these stories they both give amazing depictions of how these situations are handled and the effect of the emotions on the state of life. Then they continue to do so by giving the outcome which for some is stress and others is death George Willard only faced the stress of living and used his previous life as “a background on which to paint the dreams of his manhood” but in Farewell to Eliza the gentleman faces having to stay alive not only losing his home but his love . Beginning this song he clearly shows his grief then later is faced with knowing he is never to return home again saying “we part to meet no more” from this point further he faces his demise.
