Pre-Medicine Program Experience

I originally chose the University of San Francisco because I wanted to be a part of a diverse student body, get involved in the pre-medicine program, receive more help in a small class size, and be far away from home due to a few personal problems. However, my experience at the University of San Francisco was not like how I imagined such as being comfortable in a classroom environment of fewer than 30 students and being passionate about the classes I am currently taking. I imagined that I could find my place here as well as be able to do hands-on training for the pre-medicine program. I was not able to schedule an appointment for office hours to receive more support due to overlapping with my class schedule. There is no pre-medicine program, but a pre-professional health committee.
It wasn’t until I experienced a classroom setting of 30 to 70 students, a different environment, a busy class schedule and no hands-on experience that I realized that learning in a smaller classroom size,

I went to certain office hours that didn’t overlap with my schedule. I attended SI sessions (Supplemental Instructions) where undergraduate students that previously learned the content before provided one-on-one support and group sessions. I started to participate in the intramural basketball teams, one being co-ed and the other all women. I started to get involved in two cultural clubs: the Latinas Unidas and M.E.Ch.A (Movimiento Estudiantil Chicanx De Aztlán). I went to the Latinas Unidas meetings every Thursdays and I interacted with other female Latinas on ways to help the Latino community and Latina Empowerment. For M.E.Ch.A, I attended their meetings every Wednesdays with other Latino Students to talk about current issues that are important to us and has happened regarding the minority community, as well as trying to create solutions that we can do to help

It would be the greatest honor to be a TRIO SSS transfer mentor for Wenatchee Valley College students. I am interested in being a transfer mentor because as a first-generation college student I understand that being a first-generation student of color comes with barriers, but also gives me a unique and valuable perspective with which to bring to higher education. My parents only have an elementary education and have no understanding of the U.S educational system and as the middle child of five siblings, I understand the responsibilities and pressures youth in these populations have with shouldering the burden to accessing and disseminating information to their entire family. Additionally, I understand the cultural challenges some students of color may face as many traditional households discourage pursuing…

I am able to get involved in class and get one on one time if I don't get something that we are going over. Every teacher makes sure to tell me that there office hours and where to find them if not in the classroom. Personally it helps not having to much people in the class to interrupt the teacher and the teacher has more time to lecture about the topic. And with smaller classes I get to meet people and get to know them better as well as we get to share ideas as a ground and get to discuss things more closely.…

Well-established standards for graduate physician training in evidence-based addiction medicine curricular content do not currently exist; and modern addiction medicine physician training is especially needed in underserved populations and certain geographic locales. This proposal seeks to address these interwoven deficiencies by building on past successful work and taking advantage of the timely opportunity of recent recognition of addiction medicine by the American Board of Medical Specialties as a multispecialty subspecialty, and newly available accreditation of physician fellowship training by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Physician certification and training program accreditation, respectfully, by…

Throughout high school, I have been involved in many activities. I started off with the STEM academy in my high school. In the STEM academy, we held special events that teach people, especially kids, about new experiments and science-related careers. I helped out the STEM academy by explaining people about the experiments, the purpose behind the experiments and cleaned or organized lab equipment. I was a part of the STEM academy for approximately three years in high school and I really enjoyed it because I knew I could make a difference in my community.…

Some states, are using funds from the Class Size Reduction Program to turn low academic performing schools around by reducing classes. The idea that reducing class sizes can lead to enhanced teaching and learning is one most people would freely support. If one were given a choice between a small classes of 20 students versus 30 students, would there be a dispute that the larger class of 30 students would be a more enhanced in the learning environment for knowledge. In a smaller classroom, a teacher would have time to get to know their student's better and learn their strengths and weaknesses. Also, in a small classroom environment it may take less time to manage the classroom, which means the teacher could spend more time teaching and helping students with…

At Portland State, 51.7% of the classes contain 20 to 49 students (Portland State University). On the other hand, Harvard “has 74 percent of its classes with fewer than 20 students” (Harvard University). Over the past few years at Southridge High School, I found out that I learn best in a classroom that contains a variety of students to interact with because I love to hear numerous ideas. Portland State presents me the opportunity to interact with a variety of students due to its class size. In contrast, Harvard does not give me the opportunity to interact with a variety of students because their class sizes are smaller than Portland State.…

We also provided people with education about immunizations and hypertension so that they may live healthier lives. This summer pre-med program would be the world to me solely for the fact that I am inexperienced in the medical field. In applying to this program I have hardly any research experience and soon enough I will be transferring this coming fall, I wouldn't want nothing more than to be able to have this program under my belt before entering the UC I attend to choose. This program I expect to gain a sense of knowing and by that I mean as of now I don't know much about the medical field and research besides the fact that I know I want to help people someday and be able to provide for my family. This program will answer the questions that I have of what it takes to get into the medical field and kind of the how to get to where you want to be. With…

The size of the classroom can make a big difference on how the class learns. Teachers can spend more time teaching and less time on classroom management when classes are smaller. Students that are unable to get the help they need will shut down, and not move forward in their work. Student participation goes down and teachers are unable to give individual attention to students that need it, due to increased discipline issues (Holloway, 2002). With smaller class sizes, there would be less disciplinary referrals and more participation, with less behavioral issues.…
