Wow!! Designing my baby before it's born, how exciting. Genetic selection is the process that can be the used to determine sex, as well as genetic disease that are passed down through the family line. The process that allows one to do that is Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) ((How genetic screening could work, 2012).). Advances in biology and medical technology are opening doors in the medical world to where it’s possible for parents to specifically select traits for their children. During a Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis or embryo screening, a scientist would be able to tell what physical characteristics a child will grow to have; as well as whether or not this child is at risk of developing or will develop genetic …show more content…
Scientist has found ways to genetically alter human gametes, zygotes, or embryos to lower a child’s risk of developing many disorders and illnesses. Even being able to dictate gender, hair and eye color, height. There are developed qualities on innate qualities, no one actually knows how to “make an intelligent person”. (The pros and cons of “Designer babies ‘’, 2013) Since this technology has been develop some people use this process through these changing times genetic selection of traits has become a huge moral ethic debate. Should parents go that far as to selecting their child traits or should they accept whatever traits their child might. Since the (1990’s), the prospect of futuristic technologies, such as human cloning or selecting for super human traits, have sparked public fears about ‘designer babies. The PGD is not perfect, so is not something that you can say will give 100% of information without deception. Sometime technology can get messed up in the process of testing so if the couples decide to get rid of it and later finds out it was a false defect that can be troubling. Through it will read defect deception it can always be wrong since it's a human made machine? According the ncbi.gov, PGD has been opposed by religious, feminist, and disability-rights advocates. Some couples are having a second baby to help save the sick child. The cord from the newborn baby hold stem cell that can be used to revise the disease the other child has. The technique involves in vitro fertilization follow by genetic testing of the embryos (The regulation of biotechnologies, 2004). Though that sounds wonderful there is a lot issue with that. The baby is not harmed, but they are refereed as ‘savior siblings’. While this can be problematic, there is no statistic of how many of these ‘savior siblings’ children exist today. Another argument is that with designer babies and normal babies there will be division in the society. It will become like nature where the strong will survive and the weak adjust.
