Whole Class: The chart provided below shows the percentages of correct answers reached per student for each learning goal for the Magnet Science Unit for the pre-assessment and the post assessment. It is important to note that twenty-one students were pre-assessed and twenty-three students participated in the post assessment. On the last row of this chart, one will find the average score for each learning goal for the pre-assessment and the post assessment. The bright orange column provides the student’s average score for the pre-assessment and the dark blue column provides the student’s average score for the post assessment.

The pre-assessment for the magnet unit was a multiple choice/fill in the blank ten questions written assessment with each question worth ten points. Although there is a points value assigned to each question, students will not be graded on the pre-assessment since it will be used to gauge the students’ general understanding of magnets before beginning the unit and to collect data regarding the learning goals successfully achieved. However, since the South Carolina State Standards do not require students to study magnets until second grade, I did not expect students to score high on the pre-assessment. After viewing the data collected from the pre-assessment, it was clear that the students’ knowledge of magnets was minimal.
