I meet ST in August as she started in my Pre-AP Physical Science class. She was and is bright, and speaks well. She appears to have an overabundance of self-esteem. She makes good grades but lets them slip from time to time. I have seen her break down in tears many times, so I attempted to get to know her better. Since I could tell that ST was in need of some support I have her is two different small groups. I created a sign that is placed in an area where we meet for our small group meetings direct line of sight reminding them that, if they say they are going to hurt themselves or someone else, I am obligated to break confidentiality and get help for them as a result. It appears that a divorce is in the cards, much to the relief of ST. She has disclosed that her mother is violent, but has never hit any of the children of the home. ST says she tries to keep her younger sister of the way. ST finally disclosed that she does from time to time cut herself as a way to cope with things she cannot control. ST’s appearance of a high self-esteem is also a coping mechanism. After discussing this with ST, I ask her if I could talk to the counselor about what she told me. ST did grant me permission to discuss this with Mrs. Traylor. We decide that she was not in imminent danger, but needed to be referred to School Based Mental Health. I discussed this with ST, before making the referral. ST was on board actually welcomed the opportunity. I called both parents and after explaining how ST was in need of some additional support, and since she was covered by AR Kids it would not cost them anything. I started the referral process in November 2015, however getting the parents to cooperate with an intake visit was very difficult. I counseled with ST a lot during this time. ST told me
