Pre-AP Social Science Class: Personal Statement Analysis

Improved Essays
On the first day of my 4th period Pre-AP Social Science class, my teacher announced that she would be nominating 2 students for a scholarship based on their academic performance and service to the community. For an 8th grader, this seemed to be the most exciting opportunity I had ever heard of. It would allow some separation from my ultracompetitive classmates at one of the top middle schools in California. Even though history was not my forte, I devised a regimen that I would follow. I studied everyday afterschool, spent hours upon hours on projects, and never turned in an assignment without checking it over 3 times. At the end of the year, I was not chosen. Flash forward 3 years later, as I am on my way to an LSU School of Public Health summer internship 2,241 miles away from my home in Stockton, California. Although I had read through countless documents on lead poisoning, I could not help but wonder if I would be of any help. While attempting to navigate the second floor of the building, a labyrinth of offices and …show more content…
I was instructed to immerse myself with the Risk-Screening Environmental Indicators (RSEI) model. The goal was to create a time trend analysis of lead releases throughout New Orleans and then all of Louisiana. It could show the total amount of lead released by many facilities throughout the city in comparison to the state over a specific time period. In addition, facilities with the largest impacts could be highlighted. Post-Katrina New Orleans is still recovering 10 years later. With the known health consequences of lead exposure having been known since the 1800s, recent interest in environmental lead concentrations has sparked research projects. There has been grave concern by the medical community that a significant amount of children have elevated blood lead levels. The analysis could help to further reduce lead exposure and its corresponding potential for neurological

Fifteen years later, with the financial support from my scholarship, I became the first in my family to obtain a college degree. Some would call this phenomenon sweet irony. I, however, call it a rush to judgment due to a failure to acknowledge that issues outside of school could adversely bleed into the classroom.…

The toxicology of the chemical, lead, affects the brain because in a developing brain, such as a child’s, the cells are still being produced, therefore can be easily manipulated by the low or high levels of exposure to lead. Lead acts as a poison to the brain as it harms the mitochondria, which is critical for energy fabrication within the neuron, and an alteration in this function may damage the cell, because it does not have the proper building blocks to make it work properly, and to do its function. Lead also affects the brain’s function by interfering with neuron-transmitter release and synapse formation. Lead affects different parts of the brain such as the cerebral cortex, cerebellum, and hippocampus. The cerebral cortex assists in action…

After Flint, Mich., switched from purchasing water via Detroit to sourcing locally from the Flint River, residents began noticing a change in water quality. One resident—Lee Anne Walters—suspected the water might be toxic, and had her water tested for lead. She brought samples to Marc Edwards, an environmental engineer at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and a world-renowned expert on water treatment. He found lead levels in her tap water at 13,200 parts per billion; the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency sounds the alarm at 15 ppb. She subsequently discovered her three-year-old son had blood lead levels so high that he was considered lead poisoned.…

"There should be a program initiated to remove lead from every home in the country," attorney Brian Brown states, giving his insight as to what a solution should be (qtd. in Ludden). This system would be costly, yet effective if proven efficient. Dr. Jeffrey Griffiths, the former chairman of the E.P.A.’s Drinking Water Committee, gave his input as to what the solution to lead exposure should be, stating, ”Over the last decade we’ve learned that the testing routines did not detect true risk from lead, that there are forms of lead that we’re not testing for and that testing was too infrequent,” his idea is to use more effective testing which is likely the most practical solution (qtd. in Wines and Schwartz). No solution is perfect, but prevention is necessary in order to end this threat to children. Lead exposure is a large issue that was overlooked for a time, but with recent events, it has been brought back to the surface.…

Armed with this knowledge, and the fact that caregivers make the majority of decisions for those six years of age and younger, the target population for the Keeping Our Kids Lead Free program is the parents/guardians of non-hispanic black children less than 6 years of age in Chatham County, Georgia who are part of low-income…

Lead is a toxic metal that can enter the body by inhalation of lead dust or ingestion when touching the mouth with lead-contaminated hands. If leaked onto the ground, acid and lead particles contaminate the soil and become airborne when dry. Children and fetuses of pregnant women are most vulnerable to lead exposure because their bodies are developing. Excessive levels of lead can affect a child’s growth, cause brain damage, harm kidneys, impair hearing and induce behavioral problems. In adults, lead can cause memory loss and lower the ability to concentrate, as well as harm the reproductive system.…
