One would be that God’s word calls us to pray. Romans 12:12 says, “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer,” and Colossians 4:2 states, “Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.” There are multiple places throughout the bible where God calls us to pray, and as a result of God calling us to pray through scripture, “prayer is an act of obedience,” (Velarde). If we do not pray, we are disobeying God’s command and, therefore, dishonoring him. Another reason why we must pray is that Jesus prayed regularly, such as in Luke 5:16, “But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.” Jesus lived a life as an example for how Christians must live, so prayer must be part of our daily lives if we want to have a true relationship with God. Prayer is not only about asking God for our desires either, but rather, it is an opportunity to communicate with him. Communication is a vital part of any relationship, and our relationship with God will not grow and prosper if we are not communicating with him regularly. However, it is already more than obvious that prayer is at the core of our relationship with God and ought to be a priority. Therefore, when Proverbs 22:6 says “start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it,” prayer is certainly a part of this.
