Prayer In Public Schools

Improved Essays
After the Bill of Rights was passed American Public Schools were mostly Christian. Teacher and students said the Lord's Prayer daily, but in the late 19th century that changed. Also by the 20th century religion in American Public Schools became less able to be recognized. Supreme court eliminated religious elements and prayer from the schools because it violates The Establishment Clause. The Establishment Clause of the First Amendment states congress can not make a law respecting an establishment of religion.
Their are some people who favor religion in school, and some who do not. The first reason and the biggest problem is that people will not have the freedom of choice if one religion is pushed upon them. Critics believe that prayers will confuse feelings and cause a social imbalance and discriminate against some children and their families. A lso would expose students to religious differences. Also the critics believe in schools that are government funded, the religion of members of that government could be forced on those children and that will be a violation of their religious freedom as stated on the "Prayer in Public Schools Pros and Cons List" on the nyln.org

As stated by Kevin Ryan article. "Allowing Schools to Teach About Religion Is Dangerous." "religion isn't, like sociology or literature or even theology or any other field of study. Something important about the religions that went on in history so that should be the reason religion should be talked about as long as the religion doesn’t discriminate against one's beliefs. Religion is a personal belief system that directs the religious individual's answer to life's big questions, ultimate questions, such as: What is the meaning of my existence? What is a worthy way for me to spend my life? And how should people treat those around

In the years following the decision in the Engel v. Vitale case religion has been erased from our school systems. Although the majority feels there should be a time for personal prayer or meditation, no such allowance has come to fruition. I feel as though each person should be able to express their own beliefs in the manner they choose wherever they choose. I believe that if we were to allow the children of America to sit quietly for a moment and prayer in their own distinct way it would bring about a more open and tolerant viewpoint on one another’s…

You begin your morning at school, standing to say the Pledge of Allegiance, then are forced to say a prayer praising Jesus and God for your independence. What if you don’t believe in Christianity? In the 1960’s, there was a law passed by New York, stating that public schools would open the day with the Pledge of Allegiance, then a non-denominational prayer in which students were to recognize their independence upon God. Then, in 1962, a parent sued on behalf of his child, arguing that the law violated the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment, as made applicable to the states through the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. The case was moved all the way to the Supreme Court, which resulted in a six to one vote in favor of the plaintiff.…

The writer also appeals to logos by including statistical information such as the quote, “According to an August 2006 survey by the Pew Research Center, more than two-thirds of Americans (69%) agree with the notion that ‘liberals have gone too far in trying to keep religion out of the schools and the government’” (Lupu et al para. 4). The article also contains many facts relating to Supreme Court rulings, such as “In Engel v.Vitale (1962), the Supreme Court held that the Establishment Clause prohibited the recitation of a school-sponsored prayer in public schools” (para. 9).…

This is why we, the American people, need to ensure that there is no religious discrimination in our school systems. We need to stand up against teachings of religion in school because Thomas Jefferson said so, and the Supreme Court says so. The leaders in education need to understand that any preference of an establishment of religion is a violation of the Establishment Clause and cannot be permitted. The people of America need to fight for a separation of church and state so that our country can be the way our Founding Fathers planned it to…

And meanwhile, some common prayers might be rejected by devout Christians as weak tea” (Tribune News Service). If students don't want to practice a basic type of religion or any other religion other than theirs they should have the choice to practice their one. Many parents wouldn't like this idea. There should be a religion class but each person should get to pick their religion and practice it. The call for separation of church and state is simple, our founding fathers, who had fled from England to escape religious persecution, thought it would be best to keep the dealings of the church out of the school system. I believe it does not have to be explained why they called for such a ruling. While it is true that, in the past, prayer was allowed in schools, this was due to the U.S. being almost entirely Christian. Now we have much more diversity in our religions or lack thereof. Many people have tried to combat this decree so that prayer may, once again, be allowed in schools.…

The First Amendment states “freedom of religion”, so why can children not have this right in public school? There are plenty of different religions.…
