Prank Show Satire

Watching the rain fall on “Dancing With the Stars” on Monday night had me a little nervous. Luckily the splashing was kept to a minimum and none of the audience got sprinkles. Still, it made me wonder. What would the producers think of next? Shaking while dancing (like an earthquake), wind (by bringing in dozens of fans) and the biggest possible element could be snow. As creative as the professional dancers are on the show, I wouldn’t be surprised if a few flakes would be falling before the end of the season.

However, this year there will be two haunted houses with Ariana Grande going on the second trip. Typically, the chance to see someone get scared is funny. For some reason Andy is funnier than normal and in previous years he has actually hidden behind the people in his party. “The Ellen Show” is on

It's 12:30 in the afternoon and I have just rolled out of bed. I made myself a veggie omelette with a side of turkey bacon and a cup of coffee. I make myself comfortable on my living room couch and turn on Netflix. As I sit there and contemplate about what to watch, I decide to take a trip to the 1970's and turn on "That '70s Show."…

    Satire In Brave New World

Samuel L. Jackson once said, “We’ve come a long way in our thinking, but also in our moral decay.” This quote holds true today as society stays rapidly changing and people become more and more desensitized to the horrors of the world. The line between right and wrong fades and turns to a larger gray area, and many things that happen in society today make us question how we, as a collective people, ended up where we are and how we acquired the customs we have today. Aldous Huxley, in his novel Brave New World, uses a great deal of satire and exaggeration to express his concerns for the society he was born into and bring attention to the problems of moral decay, drug dependency, and brainwashing, among other things, in the world.…

    High School Satire

Occasionally I look back on my high school experience and realize I never did a keg stand at a party, I never skipped class to get stoned, and I also never got the guy I had a crush on for three years. Instead, I was studying for that AP government exam, standing in front of my fellow science club members talking about how we can restore our local creek, or working on hitting fastballs for softball. When I catch myself feeling as though I missed out on stereotypical high school or even college experiences I watch a movie not just any movie but a teen comedy. My ideal teen comedy has a group of friends who are about to graduate high school or already have that feel like they missed out on the clique high school experience, in order to gain some…

Different cultural and social backgrounds affect how people perceive the world. In the case of pranks, one person may respond with laughter and another may respond with anger. Pranks are typically viewed as forms of mediocre entertainment, but they offer insight into mediated culture and its societal implications. Hobbs’ and Grafe’s Youtube Pranking Across Cultures, examines cultural differences in online prank videos; they establish that pranks are a dark form of cyberculture, and I strive to further document their findings of how its negativity results in social solidarity and ethical discussion.…

„One American citizen will effectively choose the next President“ - the scenario in which the main characters, alcoholic unemployed factor worker Bud Johnson (Kevin Costner) and his bright and idealistic daughter Molly (Madeline Carroll), find themselves in in Joshua Michael Stern's new movie is at first difficult to accept. If one is able to look past this, „Swing Vote“ delivers some satirical moments as well as heartwarming scenes – though it can't really decide if it's aiming to be a family drama or a political satire. On Election Day, Molly, who is playing the part of her father's child, wife, and mother simultaneously, begs her father to fulfill his „civic duty“ and vote. He, on the other hand, is opposed to voting in general, on the conviction that his vote would not make any difference anyways. In the end he agrees to do his daughter, who is way more politically informed than he himself is, a favor, though that intention ends up in him spending the evening passed out in his car after…

Usually the definition holds true among friends, where pranks are commonplace and not particularly remarkable most of the time. However, even within these social circles, pranks signify some concerning issues, such as power imbalance. Furthermore, the advent of new media exposes pranking to a wider audience than ever before.
