Prank Persuasive Essay

Decent Essays
We would like to sincerely apologize for our role in the theft and damaging of several political lawn signs around the city of Fond du Lac over the summer.
Our actions were very immature and inappropriate. Our actions were not inspired out of malice or ill will but were intended as a prank. In retrospect, we have come to realize that our actions went far beyond what could be called a prank. We did not mean to insult or demean anyone.
We now realize that our actions, while intended as a prank, infringed on the free speech of those that we stole signs from. Freedom of speech and expression are valued aspects of American life and we are very sorry for our role in disrespecting the free speech of others.

Students are combating the issue of no longer being able to enjoy crude humor with one another and are beginning to take a step back to take the precautions so there will not be any actions taken against them upon the college campus about the choice of words that one uses. Lukianoff and Haidt explain how entertaining the aggressions can be seen as an aggression itself and show how a student explained their thoughts, “Last fall, Omar Mahmood, a student at the University of Michigan, wrote a satirical column for a conservative student publication, The Michigan Review, poking fun at what he saw as a campus tendency to perceive microaggressions in just about anything” (Lukianoff, Haidt). Students have taken microaggressions to the extreme to showcase how they feel and how its going to affect themselves and others. Coming to the realization that microaggressions for some can violate the freedom of speech right, which is what Lukianoff is striving to protect that…

Discovering the Music of Protest There is perhaps no epidemic in America worse then the racism and discrimination black people have face since the creation of this “free” nation. A shameful secret that the American government still barely acknowledged but a very real problem that has only grown with time with police murdering innocent black men, women and children, and the more recent event of having a raging racist elected as the USA’s new president. That is why I have decided to write my essay on “Strange Fruit” by Abel Meeropol performed most famously by Billie Holiday. “Strange Fruit” is perhaps the most iconic protest song in recent memory. With a haunting piano intro followed by Billie Holiday’s shaking voice this song shot to fame being nominated for a bevy of awards, and for good reason, it lingers in your mind the lyrics and it pulls no punches, telling the story of those who died these painful deaths without the rose coloured glasses historians like describe it as.…

At the ends of each semester college kids are packing up to return for the holidays. They’ll pack their clothes, throw out old assignments they never turned in, and look through their food to see what needs to go. In ‘Dumpster Diving’ by Lars Eighner he talked about how college kids are throwing out food, giving it an unfair characterization. Only a few percent of college kids are the party-going, drug addicted, drinker types but there are determined college kids who stay away from all of that and focus on being in their dorm or home studying or relaxing because let’s face it college is stressful.…

A month after the Dent and his fellow conservatives’ claims, liberal students erased anti-abortion messages written on sidewalks on campus. The group responsible for the erasure, UNC’s Students United for Reproductive Justice, urged others on their Facebook page to go fan across campus with mops to remove the messages, adding an over-the-top description of the original anti-abortion statements: “This is triggering. This is violence. This is cooptation. This is not okay.”…

Hindu students in particular may often feel like they are under scrutiny from our students and staff. In the UCSC news article “East Remote parking lot graffiti”, the tone and diction of this article strongly suggests that the swastika is a hate symbol: “Regrettably, anti-Semitic graffiti continues to be posted in different campus areas.” (Public Affairs) They also claim that “Regrettably, anti-Semitic graffiti continues to be posted in different campus areas.” This is not just the bias of the author, this article reflects the University’s attitude towards this symbol, and how they define this symbol.…

Despite the new outburst of year-round schooling across the nation, I have the firm belief that we should retain the traditional system. Most schools who have switched to the year round calendar switched back to the traditional one because the anticipated instructional advantages haven’t materialized. In some cases, it even results in a drop of one to two percentile points in national rank for reading, math, and language scores, compared to a traditional calendar. It is not a good idea to keep making this change.…

600 million pounds of candy are bought every year for Halloween, which totals up to a whopping 1.9 billion dollars. Kids around the world are enjoying the fun of it yearly, which is great in my opinion. Even though nearly everyone loves Halloween, there are still some flaws I’ve seen while trick or treating, or in the news. Whether it is wasting candy, lacing it with drugs, or unenthusiastic people, I think we need to change it. If I could change something in the world, it would be the way we give out and eat candy for Halloween.…

The students who belong to the Young American for Liberty chapter were stopped from passing copies of the U.S Constitution. Administrators advise that they were in restricted area when Burch walked up to other students distributing the literature. The restriction comes from the National Security Agency. This agency limits the free speech zone to 1/3-acre area on the edge of the 115-acre campus of the University of Hawaii. FIRE’s Stand Up for Speech Ligation project facilitated these two student in being able to reach a settlement with the University of Hawaii.…

The Perilous Fight: Protesting the Desecration of the American Flag Jeszenia McGuire Elms College On November 10th, 2016 Hampshire College, a small, private, and grossly expensive liberal arts institution in Amherst, Massachusetts flew their flag at half-staff following the victory of President-Elect Donald J. Trump. Sometime in the early morning hours of the following day, a group of unknown students set fire to the fundamental symbol of our country’s freedom. After this development, Hampshire College took down all flags on campus. When I first heard about Hampshire College 's decision to not fly the American flag, I was at a loss for words, and I was not the only one; veterans at the Springfield Veteran’s Association went to work preparing a demonstration, with the hopes of getting the college to raise the flag again.…
