Prairie dogs communicate in forms of yips which sound similar to the chirp of a bird. In addition to the yips there are also barks. These creatures send and receive sound waves in a similar fashion to many land mammals. Prairie dogs are insensitive to mid range frequencies and have a difficult time hearing high-frequency sounds. Researchers believe this is the case because it is hard for the these mammals to hear high-frequency noises in their underground homes. This may give you the impression that Prairie Dogs’ communicate in a simple manner, but there is so much more.
