Participation and Meetings Brigham and Women’s Faulkner hospital is in an expansion phase 13 new beds have opened across medical and surgical floors over the past year, and a new 12 bed observation unit is in the design phase of construction. Being invited to observe the working group consisting of managers from Physical Therapy, Nursing, Case Management, Human Resources and the Emergency Department proved to be an invaluable experience. Each department head had goals and priorities that they wanted to be addressed, conversely not all these goals were compatible with each other. Regardless of these conflicts, my preceptor was able to allow each department to fully air their needs. On this day I witnessed the Psychiatric unit and Emergency Department nurse manager meetings. Staffing pattern shifts for both registered nurses (RN) and patient care assistants (PCA) were discussed in each meeting. Not only were staffing patterns discussed but PCA responsibilities for each unit as well. This was of interest to me because each meeting was separate from the other, and the tact that my preceptor took for each supervisor was unique. She was again demonstrating a humanistic approach to her leadership, this I believe is demonstrating authentic leadership put into practice by tailoring her technique to everyone’s strong points and areas of needed
