Practicing Mindfulness Awareness

Studies show that practicing mindfulness can help manage mild depression, anxiety and other common mental health problems. The National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) – the organisation that produces guidelines on best practice in health care – recommends: using mindfulness to treat mild depression and to help prevent further episodes of depression. Mindfulness awareness can be used in mental health management plan because it empowers the client to step back, reflect on and evaluate their thinking. They still ‘feel’ the emotion, but they can learn to recognise it, acknowledge it and make choices in response that are more productive, such as phoning a supportive friend, taking medication, having a walk or other exercise,

For example, Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a well structured group program that teaches mindfulness meditation to relieve the symptoms of psychological, physical and psychosomatic suffering (Grossmann, 2004).
