Practice Variability In Basketball

Designing basketball practices are not always an easy task to accomplish, but getting the most out of them is essential for everyone, especially the players. There are many different ways to utilize practice time, and I think that practice variability is one of the best tools to use when designing practice activities. Basketball coaches who use practice variability in their activities will lead to an overall better performance and outperform those experiencing low levels of variability. To maximize the learning potential, the player should perform the skill in a variety of ways rather than one just way. The benefits of practice variability are that it increases the capacity to perform the skill in future game situations.

Coaching youth basketball has given me an opportunity to help young kids learn to love basketball. In Coach Rick’s after school basketball program we stress positivity, teamwork, and inclusion rather than the success of the individual. Mistakes are encouraged, not looked down upon. Helping kids with difficult attitudes become team-oriented and positive carries beyond the basketball court. Coaching in the same program that I played in has helped shape my attitude towards everything: positivity, learning from failure, and bringing up those less talented than others.…

Upon completion of the self-assessment, I was presented with the results, which were Visual 2, Aural 3, Read/Write 4, and Kinesthetic 7. This translates into a slight preference for Kinesthetic learning, in which I am more apt to learn from actually performing a task than attempting to simply hear about how it is performed, watching it be performed, or reading and writing about the item in question. Personally, I find that the results are not completely accurate, as I feel that I learn more from listening to someone explain a topic than reading and writing about that topic.…
