Personal Narrative: A Day At A Soccer Team

Improved Essays
Practice was light the day before the game. There was minimal running with mostly set plays, and things like that. We got the usual spiel about drinking water, eating healthy, and getting plenty of sleep, but we would all stay up until two anyway. Although, something was different about the team, there was an anxiety or something of the sort radiating off of each player. Everyone was thinking about what would happen tomorrow at the first game of the season, Pike versus Guerin Catholic. Our adversary Pike, is a large public school with a good soccer team and lots of talent, and we were going in with a target on our back. We were Guerin Catholic high school, state champions the year before, and everyone was out to get us. I knew the only way that made winning feasible was if we worked hard and played together as a team.
Post practice was even more stressful. I was not hungry, so I did not eat dinner. I felt sick to my stomach. These are not ideal conditions for anyone, much less someone with a few hours of homework to get done. When I finally got to

A certain intensity and fear hovered above the players. Almost like they were walking through a haunted house, taking every step meticulously, waiting for something to jump out at them. Because of that, it was not very hard for the captains to get us hyped for the kick off. From the minute we stepped off the bus we were ready. Ready to win, ready to give 110% to this game. Our defense was comprised of all seniors and was almost impervious to any attack. We were counting on them to win this game. Therefore, this was a team of small freshmen and sophomores playing against mostly juniors and seniors at the varsity level in one of the most talented high school conferences in the state. We finished the season 1-15, most of which were pretty tough losses but we worked hard and left it all on the field every game and that in the end is all that matters. The most prevalent memory was after the last game all the players were pretty upset about how it went but our coach ended our last huddle with, “We came into this season knowing it would be challenging and we worked hard from start to finish and I think we ended this season better than we started, which means that next year is gonna be a pretty good…

Commencing our execution of every meet in intention, we were conscious that our effort would amount to…

We began to train even harder, disregarding the swelling on our knees and ankles, tasting the conviction and persistence in the training court shared by all. Meanwhile, I watched professional soccer games, read coaching books every night and observed the training of our rival team, and tried to think of a good strategy. My research drove me to play a direct counter attack style to win the games. In the final team meeting before the big game, I presented my strategy, and convinced them that every individual’s potential is indeed unlimited, especially when they focus on their goal and work together. If the whole team believed in each other and fight to the end, we could change a failure to a victory.…

It was beginning to get dark on a Thursday night in the middle of November of my freshman year in high school. As we were beginning to conclude practice, Coach King called us into a huddle to discuss with us the game plan for our next game against Calvary Christian School. As coach was addressing all of the tasks that needed to be done before the game the next day, I was overwhelmed with a certain nervousness that sent chill through my body. Earlier in the week, our starting quarterback was injured and I was given the starting job. At the time that I was first told that I would be the starting quarterback for the coming week’s semifinal game, I did not experience any nervous feeling.…

In lieu of letting the new players struggle with learning technical skills, I and a few other veteran team members taught the new players the fundamentals of soccer. Through weeks of training and weekend practices we all began to see growth in our new team. From this moment I knew my hard work was beginning to pay off. We endured many discouraging losses from the first few games; which turned a lot of heads in my direction. But we slowly bonded as a team and learned how to play together which showed on the scoreboard.…

I did my observation at Miami’s women’s soccer game on September 6 against Florida International’s team. It also happened to be Senior Day, so a lot of families were there. There were also a lot of young girls wearing soccer jerseys, which makes me think that a soccer team was there. It was a very hot (around 90 degrees) and sunny afternoon, and a lot of people were sitting with umbrellas to block the sun. Both teams played very hard, but neither team scored until the last 9 minutes.…
