I personally believe that the educational requirements should begin with special personality traits. Someone who is compassionate, considerate, humane and warmhearted just to name a few. But in the educational sense it first requires a high school diploma. This could be from the traditional high school diploma but also from graduating getting your GED. Being supervised by a Registered Nurse, as an LPN your commitment to dispense oral and IV medications, administer, care and properly insert feedings through nasogastric or gastrostomy tubes and take vital signs are some of the daily responsibilities. Accurately charting medical records plays a significant role in documented progression, care given and feedback throughout the care of the patient. You will also be required to insert and care for catheters as well as care for patients with tracheostomies and on ventilators, caring and educating patients who have ostomies and may even have to perform CPR. Closely monitor patients for any change in their condition and report this to your supervising RN. Do not hesitate to contact the physician if needed and be prepared to take phone and verbal orders from them. You are the eyes and ears for the supervising RN and physician so always pay close attention to your patient and surroundings. Consulting and educating patients and their family for at home care is a crucial part of recovery for the individual.
