Before the Powhatan’s land and nation was destroyed, the men fished in canoes throughout bays and rivers. The men also hunted and protected family. They hunted many things, including; deer, muskrats, rabbits, wild turkeys, and even bears! The women grew crops, built houses, and gathered. Some of crops they grew included: corn, melons, beans, and squash. Also, the ladies took care of the children, showing boys how to become skilled and good hunters. The women gathered shellfish, like clams, crabs, and oysters, and picked other things, such as; berries, wild roots, and nuts. Then, the colonists came. The Powhatan helped colonists, but too many colonists came to their land, and colonists decided to fight
