“ Ultima comes to stay with us the summer I am almost seven”. “When she comes the beauty of the llano unfolds before my eyes, and the gurgling waters of the river sang the hum of the turning earth”. Ultima brings her owl along with her, they are a package deal. Ultima slips easily into the Marez family’s daily life. Ultima and her owl gradually change the community’s lives one incident at a time. In Chapter 10, Antonio’s uncle, Lucas gets sick. Lucus is bewitched, a bruja has put a curse on him. Everyone tries to help Lucus in every way possible. Even the great doctor in Las Vegas is powerless to help cure Lucus, as well as the priest of El Puerto. The family decides that they will come to Ultima for help. Ultima closes herself and Antonio in Lucus’s room. She …show more content…
Tenorio brings an entire rowdy mob to the house of the Marez family. Tenorio and the others are looking for Ultima because they claim that she is a witch. Antonio’s family protects Ultima by keeping Turner2 her safe inside their home. Narciso offers a compromise, suggesting that they make Ultima undergo a test for witchcraft. The compromise was that if she was unable to pass through a doorway marked with a cross made by needles ,she is proven to be a witch. The mob of people as well as Tenorio agree to the compromise. All of a sudden Ultima’s owl attacks Tenorio and claws out one of his eyes. When everyone looks back at the door, Ultima has crossed the door and proves she is not a witch. Even though, the rowdy mob accepts this and leaves, Tenorio stills insists that Ultima is indeed a witch and that he will kill her. This particular incident reflects the value of the community.
