In this paper, you will see how masking can change, enrich, and fulfill people's lives and result in acceptance. The cases I describe below show what people go through and the reasons they choose to mask themselves. These cases further prove masking is more beneficial than harmful.
Masking is more beneficial because it can give people the confidence they need. As an example, in my personal reading of the book “Powerless”, there were kids with superpowers going around the town helping citizens secretly. Things changed when the new kid (Matthew) moved in town and he found out that these kids

In the book “Ghost” a kid named Kastle was not good at school, considered poor and had low motivation. It all changed when he joined the local track team and obtained special silver shoes. This gave him the motivation to do well on the track team and do well in school by keeping himself out of trouble. In another case involving the video “ My dad’s a liar”, the dad lied to his daughter in order for her to become successful in life even though he had to be obscure in his approach. The dad settled on unpopular jobs to earn money to support his daughter and became popular in the family. His daughter was his motivation and ultimately helped increase his self esteem. As outlined in these stories self esteem had driven the main characters to do amazing things for a family or for something very important even though it wasn’t in the best interest of their normal lifestyle. Similar results could have been accomplished by relying on others to change their attitudes. Even though the options to be liked were not great, it was easier to adjust to the needs of others versus having bigger changes for the family or friends they were attempting to

As Roger Crawford once said, “being challenged in life is inevitable, being defeated is optional. ” Life is full of obstacles, some easier to overcome than others; nearly all difficulties, however, can be conquered by attacking them with zeal and confidence. Individuals who attempt to escape their realities by developing alternative personas or using subterfuge ultimately fail in life–whether it be in their relationships, careers, or personal fulfillment. People who resist the alluring temptation to become someone else, avoid the fleeting escape offered by their alter ego, and remain true to themselves, on the other hand, are far better equipped to battle life’s challenges - despite criticism, lack of acceptance, and doubt from the people around…

Losing Oneself in Love August Meyer Black 2 As we see with many Congress men and women, often times they only try to please others and not themselves. This has thus made them lose themselves, until they can try to regain themselves out of office. Thus, the theme of The Great Gatsby is that, sometimes people try to change themselves or others to become satisfied with their life and in the process lose themselves. We are going to look into many reasons why The Great Gatsby clearly shows this trait. First let’s talk about Mr. Jay Gatsby one of the main characters.…

In his 1977 essay, “In Defense of Masks”, Kenneth Gergen introduces the concept of multiple personas and personalities as being ‘masks’. In his psychological and sociological research, Gergen concludes that people do not have a coherent sense of identity and need masks to be happy, healthy, and successful in society. I agree with Gergen because different situations call for different personalities; such as acting professional for a job interview, being lively with friends, or maintaining a perfect image of yourself for other. Most jobs call for a certain degree of professionalism. People put on masks while at work to give off an impression of uniformity.…

Let me tell you about a wee little one, who played to the tune of a cautionary tale. His name was John Doe. All his life the people around him told him, “just keep your head down and don’t make trouble for yourself,” “don’t be smart with me young man,” or a personal favorite, “why can’t you be more like so-and-so?” Because he hasn’t had any actual character definition in his own life, he looks to others for guidance, or to fit in. Now depending on the people that resonate with little John, there may be different impressions left, but what if he emulates the wrong…

Despite all my teasing, I do believe that our bond is inseparable. I also believe that we wear masks not only for ourselves but for the people around us, so they do not worry- although society may be the reason as to why we wear masks in the first place. However, sometimes, I start to think that it may not be such a bad thing to wear masks after-all since in some instances, my mind begins to take after my positive mask which isn’t a negative thing. I also believe that masks should not be seen as something unfavorable or “fake” as it is one’s attempt to make others around less uncomfortable or to fit in along with everyone…

Title Psychodynamic psychologists believe that everything that we do or say today is directly, and infallibly, linked to the events that we have encountered in our past. In the journey from the cradle to the grave our minds process and internalize the environments we encounter; these experiences often imprint themselves in our conscience, thereby changing our behavior and attitude towards the outside world. When peering into what makes someone the way they are as an adult, his or her childhood is likely considered to a great extent. If a child is brought up with exceeding encouragement and endorsement, they will most likely have good prospects. However, if someone is abused in adolescence they will exhibit adverse traits in maturity.…

Self-Determination Theory "Self-Determination theory (SDT) is an approach to human motivation and personality that uses traditional empirical methods while employing an organismic metatheory that highlights the importance of humans’ evolved inner resources for personality development and behavioral self-regulation"(Ryan & Deci, 2000, p. 68). Within this paper onee will discuss the correlation between SDT and motivation in relations to personal individual growth, and professional development. Determining Motivation "Self-determination theory suggests that there are different types of motivation, such that people vary not only in level of motivation but also in the source or quality of that motivation. At the same time, SDT postulates a continuum of autonomy to order those types of motivation" (Chemolli & Gagne, 2014, p. 575). Motivation is derived from the desire of the nature at hand; the interest of the specified subject, will determine the depth of the motivation.…
