Power Of Words In The Book Thief By Markus Zusak

Words hold great power and when used correctly can influence people’s beliefs, and how they act. In Markus Zusak novel, The Book Thief, narrated by Death, Zusak tells the story of Liesel a nine years old German girl who was abandoned by her mother and loses her brother before going to the Hubermann’s house in the city of Molching. She first found the power of words when her foster father Hans Hubermann teaches her how to read, Liesel developed a power that she never knew existed before. Many characters develop an understanding of the power of words which in many characters being impacted negatively. In the novel The Book Thief, the author Markus Zusak illustrated the power of words in different ways. Zusak conveys to us that both a person’s survival …show more content…
For example, In max’s book, a young girl, grows a tree from her words, they were too strong to be destroyed by the Nazi. Liesel was reading Max’s book the world The Word Shaker. It states that “ Many hours passed, and still the fuhrer’s ax could not take a single bite out of the trunk” ( Zusak 447). Max portrays Liesel words to a tree that is spreading goodness over the evilness of the Nazi. Her words are so strong that even Hitler the master of manipulation cannot destroy them, it shows us that even though people would try to destroy beauty, there would always be beauty in the darkness. This is important because no matter what to Liesel’s loved ones her words would survive to spread goodness among evilness. For example, when Liesel’s classmates make fun of her because she could not read. It was Liesel first day of school when they asked her to write her name could not. It states, “ I’m having trouble with this word. Could you read it for me? After being humiliated by her classmates, Liesel avenges her humiliation through violence, and she eventually realizes that the greater power that words hold to violence.
