For a relatively young country, America has been involved in many critical wars. However, the Civil War stands as one of the most substantial blemishes in American History. It was a time of division, where the agricultural South and industrial North fought to abolish slavery, which was the backbone of the South’s economy. Nothing exemplified the countries division like the contrast of both sides’ military generals. The South’s general, Robert E. Lee was traditional man, rooted in the mindset of privileged upper class dominance, and class segregation.…
In the early 17th century boat upon boat would bring Africans to America to be sold as slaves and placed on plantations and other unfavorable positions. Although it was a turning point in African culture in brought upon the rise of the African American who although had changed significantly from his African roots still managed to keep some of their original identity. This retention of African identity also played a pivotal role in African American music, although it had gone through many changes whether they were naturally occurring or forced up on it, the African roots could still be pulled to the surface with rather ease. At first all was stripped from the slaves who arrived, in some cases even their music however over time and in different areas things like work songs would become more and more common because in the slave owners eyes these work songs promoted good work ethic and efficiency. Already we see a connection back to the African culture, the work song.…
Music and society have a large impact on each other, and how they shape the way people view and act in the world. There are four themes that identify and characterize how music has evolved over the past one hundred years. These themes also show how music affects and expresses the culture that not only we live in today, but also how we have changed in our views on numerous aspects of today’s society. The four themes that are explored directly with a specific artist and, or, band are how they impact society, politics, and several cultural issues that have stood the test of time and the way race, class, and gender are expressed in music. The development of the music industry and the technology used in it are widely affected by the change in music over decades, but also by outstanding individuals during their careers, which span over a variable amount of time.…

In Lincoln and the Music of the Civil War, Kenneth A. Bernard writes “In camp and hospital they sang- sentimental songs and ballads, comic songs and patriotic numbers- the songs were better than rations and medicine. (Lincoln and the Music of the Civil War)” This shows how music gives people the motivation not only to endure, but to unite with neighbors in defiance of the enemy. Music provides a connection to the cause, and also to their brethren who are off fighting. Many songs outline praises and mournings after battles and events.…

Throughout the last century, music has transformed drastically in numerous ways. For example, in the 1950’s, songs were almost entirely acoustic and incredibly organic. Artists in the industry did not have access to the technology available today, which made them rely on their talents alone. Today, individuals are able to autotune their vocals and they have tools such as metronomes, drum machines, etc. that can enhance their songs.…

Throughout history, war antagonists transformed their concern, empathy, and anger into emotional poetry, visual art, or music. Although war culture typically fell into the pro-war category, the Vietnam War’s musical culture was different from other wars in that its song fell into the anti-war category because of the negative sentiment towards the war that new technology and the media were perpetuating. Rock and Roll eventually became knows as the “weapon of cultural revolution”, as it influenced changed amongst all American, including African Americans, women, and teenagers. Although anti-war music was not the only source that ended the Vietnam War, the political, anti-Vietnam War music did raise spirits and liberate previously suppressed…

This was called the Great Migration this relocation was due to the discrimination and disfranchisement of Blacks in the south. 6 million blacks poured into Northern, Midwestern, West coast cities ,largely New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles, in search for a better life and job opportunities. Due to restrictions on where blacks could live, they were limited to ghettos in the inner city.2 In New York, many moved to the upper Manhattan area, particularly Harlem; in fact, by 1923, there were an estimated 150, 000 African-Americans living in Harlem.3 This migration of people helped fuse cultures and greatly contributed to what many know as the Harlem Renaissance,…
A role to which was, in many cases, a greater effect on the war than to the efforts of the Allied Powers. At first, Music in World War II lead to many evident racial tensions, anxiety, and financial battles. However, the end reinstated music as one of the biggest, at home, driving forces of the war. Music generated the center of war related information, news, and its convincing propaganda. It pushed out strong nationalistic views for the world, which, in turn, created great moral and…
Lydia Goehr breaks down the question of how music is tied to politics, and specifically addresses arguments of whether it should be or not. The author starts her discussion with a historical example with the inquest of composer Hanns Eisler by the Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC). The author’s intention in presenting this case appears when she focuses on the defense Eisler. He made statements to the Committee that suggested his music was “music, and nothing else,” having nothing to do with politics. This was in sharp contrast to his previous works which had several political messages and had regarded music as “inseparable from politics.”…
If it wasn’t for the music back then, the Americans today wouldn’t have a unique approach to music and it would be meaningless. Music today doesn’t differ much from the past, if anything it just evolved. This is a reason why Americans take the art of music so dearly. Music would be one of the few luxuries the colonists had in their time and would change their everyday…
