Society forces men and women into strict gender roles. These positions are not flexible and must be abided by which causes violence against women. Media endorses gender roles such as: “men in charge...women follow...men superior...women inferior… women equal less value...sexual objects”(Call to Men). These tropes all pressure boys into following the restrictions placed upon them. Media subjects women to the violence that society itself has created by giving men a “man box” as described by Tony Porter in “Call to Men.” Tony Porter, a TedTalks speaker, as a boy was expected by a neighbor, Johnny, to rape a 16 year old girl, Sheila. As he entered the room with the girl, he felt “petrified with [his] back to the door so Johnny couldn 't get in the room.” Then, he zipped down his pants and walked out of the room. He made sure he was zipping up as he walked past the assembly line of boys waiting their turn to display their manhood. The boys asked, “how was it… [he] said it was good” then walked out feeling that this man box society forced upon him was more important than what was happening to Sheila. Society is to blame for men’s fear of losing their masculinity in the eyes of others(Call to Men).
